Hey guys, this problem is driving me crazy. I recently bought a new fan for my old nvidia geforce 5700 fx because the old one stopped working. All was good for a month or so. Now everytime I turn my computer on, I get this incredible chainsaw sound.I searched for the cause of it and it seems it's the new fan.
I opened my comp took it out and it seemed it had a sticker inside the fan that was screwing around with it. I took it out but what do you know I still have that weird sound. But what's so funny about this is that if I take the graphic cards out of the socket it won't make a sound, it will only do it when it's attached to the computer. Any suggestions besides buying some earplugs ?

Update - It seems that if I put my computer on the horizontal the sound will go away. It's good but I don't have room to have the computer like this.

I just put a new 8400 in my pc and get a grating noise when it first starts.

Could be a number of things. I had an old thermaltake CPU fan a few years back, and I had to remove the cowling (possibly not the word) to reduce the noise from it.

From what you have described is that the bearing in the fan is faulty. Possibly try another fan on it.

I’d also go for either a new fan or a heatsink. Much easier than experimenting with either lubrication or tempting fate with your card.

    Two alternatives are linked below:

I guess I could buy a new cooling device, but it's weird because it worked perfectly for a month or so.

I haven't had to mess with a graphics card fan in some time, but when different friends would install a new chipset/graphics/whatever fan and it was making a noise, it was bearing-related because the screws holding the fan onto the heatsink had been tightened down too tight, distorting the fan itself.

If I invert the tower and put it upside down the noise goes away, I am gonna try messing with the screws.
Managed to fix it, I mean kinda, the fan's own inner plastic box was the one that was causing all this noise, I just had to put a little plastic thing between the two boxes. It's pretty amateur but it works :P

Crap fan, bound to be. The difference in volume between a good fan and a crap one is vast.

    Buhahahaha!

"At noon today (Eastern Standard Time), the long dead ORDB spam identification system began returning false positives as a way to get sleeping users to remove the ORDB query from their spam filters. The net effect: all mail is blocked on servers still configured to use the ORDB service, which was taken out of commission in December of 2006. So if you're not getting any mail, check your spam filter configuration!"
Everyone one of the email admins I know is suffering fallout from this, it's hilarious.

No problem, I'm happy to help.

I came across this not too long ago, I thought I'd post a link to it in case someone here can use it. Even if you can't use the information, it's still interesting:

    http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/5...nternetea0.jpg

It's a "map of the Internet" someone drew. It shows a general overview of all of the class A subnets and what country/continent they are being used in. I used it to block a ton of IPs on my mail server, as well as a few on the web servers. Yea, I know it's a bit dated, but the majority of it is still relevant (they don't reassign IP allocations everyday ). One note, alot of the blocks labeled as unallocated (the ones in green) are in fact now in use.

    Hello All

Any thoughts on the install of SP3? Is it likely to be buggy or good to go?

should just be all the latest patching in one large update, but from what ive heard is there are no major performance updates.

Yup, your comp may say SP2, but if its fully updated its the same as SP3 - just that its called SP3 when you used one package to update everything instead of patches on to SP2 .. same deal.. MS just likes to make it more confusing

Given a choice between installing SP2, then 140+ other updates, or SP3, I'll take SP3 thanks. However, at this point I have yet to install it at any of my clients, so I can't say whether its easy/reliable.

On a similar, yet slightly ranty topic. I have found a new combination of software to hate: Vista + Symantec Endpoint Protection. What a complete cluster-feck.
