Some have suggested that this problem may also be linked with:

a: an Nvidia video card driver update; or
b: a poorly installed OEM installation of Windows (not sure about this one).
Your "b" seems to be the overriding culprit from what I've found; seems HP and maybe a few other vendors made one default PC image for use on all of the PCs and laptops that they sell, and the image was originally done on an Intel processor-based computer, so anyone who got one of the PCs/laptops with an AMD processor is having a**loads of problems.

    Three cheers for job security...

Just using it now without the logitec wireless mouse, using the not so smart pad on the laptop instead and it's working fine. The scroll wheel on the logi died a couple of months ago and even though it's a fairly new mouse I might start from scratch.

    Cheers fellas.

I purchased a new microsoft optical mouse 3000 and have heaps of problems with it, the $10 specials seem to work better. The sensor inside seems really weak.

    Default Hard Disk Help Needed

Alright so my hard disk went ape**** on me. Now its dead with all of my photos gone forever. Now here is my question is there a way to get my files back with the hard drive having that clicking sound? If not, can somebody help me choose a new one I have narrowed down to two choices.

Or perhaps you guys might have other suggestions

    My budget is $70.00

And the HDD needs to be ATA.

    Thanks in advance

    SATA?

I dont mind either of those brands, stick with the bigger brands if you do pick one.

I don't think that my motherboard supports SATA, its the older one(ATA)

Which one should I pick? I am a bit clueless when it comes to this stuff.

Long and short is, if they have similar functions and price, the one with the best warranty

I would go seagate, the WD reviews are quite poor. I have had a few WD fail over the years (3 or so in 10 years), but TheKiwi or another IT pro may have some thoughts.

Do you know how to use FDISK?

I agree man. I've just got a ell cheapo. Cords heavily taped up and it's still going strong after 5 years.

Not really, but I thought of just booting the system with the new hard drive and just formatting and partitioning the drive through WinXp installation CD. I am also contemplating upon the idea of putting Linux as the OS.

yea, that is what i would say, i have 3 WD's on my desktop, just for the fact i wanted to keep it all one brand, i normally go for a known company at the best price - after that there really isnt much of a diffrence.

    Cool.

Fdisk is pretty easy to use, although I didnt know that you could partition through the installation CD. Shows how old school i am.

XP gives you an option to do that on fresh install ..

SikorskiUS sounds like that would be the way i would go. but add Linux to a secondary slave HD <i always happen to have 2 or 3 HDs laying around> backup **** cache
