Gajin, I have AVG on my home PC. It is ok and so far have been lucky. It has let some malware through. It is an anti virus that I paid for too. I have looked at a number of anti virus programs and have decided on Vipre. I hear good things. I know this is no help but thought I would throw this in.

I havr McAfee on Win7, running Firefox with java and pop-up blockers. I had a trojan on my system once(the only time i've had any virus on my PC) but McAffee detected it and pretty much took it out as soon as the containing file was done downloading.

I used to use Mcafee that my cable company gave me a free subscription to. It was a suite with all the trimmings. It was a memory pig (slowed my PC down) and failed to detect trojans. I DL AVG and found I believe 24 trojans on my rig. Since then I figured that you get what you pay for. $40 to $50 per year is no big deal when it comes to security, specially if you conduct business online.

Default Apple time Capsule + Ipad?

I am thinking of getting an Ipad for my folks. the only thing that is stopping me is it's small size. i don't want to shell out so much money on the biggest capacity ipad. I want to get he cheapest one, which is only 16gb.

I understand that Apple Time Capsule is sort of like a wireless hard drive. Do you think it would be possible to put all of my media there, hook it up to my wifi, and have the ipad access it remotely.

Maybe I don't have to use Apple Time capsule, maybe I can use another wireless hard drive/media server setup.

Have anyone thought about doing this? Any other ideas?

    Gaijinsamurai… a few more thoughts.

Having been infected several times and had to re-install my OS and software with total loss of data, I’ve learned that the best defense is an ounce of prevention.

    Some rules I follow:

    1. Use Firefox (with Adblock Plus and Noscript for a clean screen)
    2. Use Thunderbird for e-mail.
    3. Use another firewall other than the built in Windows one. Choose one that can stop outgoing data to prevent Trojans from adding more crap.
    4. Think before you download or open uncertain sites or e-mail attachments. Most crap gets on the box by the user allowing it.
    5. Use Sandboxie if you must go to dubious sites. I also use an old iMac for “iffy” sites, it’s pretty much bullet proof.
    6. Get an external USB drive and make periodic clones of your HD. I currently use a Seagate Free Agent 1TB USB drive that comes with it’s own backup and cloning software (clones the entire HD including OS and all other software and data, $100.00 at Wal-Mart) I have also used Acronis True Image software (about $50.00) and a plain old HD in a USB enclosure. If you have Windows 7 Home Premium and above, it comes with it’s own cloning software and only needs an external drive for maximum security.
    7. Work behind a router.
    8. Keep all software updated, but wait a few weeks before d-loading new Microsoft “fixes”. Disable automatic updates.

I’ve had no infections for five years now and plan to keep it that way.

    Good luck.

Going back to the altoids tin amp.

Couldn't find the dual op amp OPA2132PA I needed at the 'shack, but they did have some LM741 op amps. I can use this instead?

I'd stick with what is detailed in the instructions. Rolling Amps is fairly easy though. Head-Fi will have people who know about really good combos per what you are using, combos for the specific type(s) of music you listen to.

Post a question pertaining to your altoid based amp, and see what happens. Sorry I can't be more help.

Thanks everyone. I'm still working on the problem (I'm at my work computer right now). A co-worker suggested I restore my system to the status it was at a week ago. Tried it, with no luck.
I received an e-mail from E-bay today, informing me that someone had tried to make purchases with my account. Needless to say, I will be changing passwords, ASAP.

Typically that kind of infection will also insert itself into the system restore images, so that if you restore, you get the infection right back. Any chance of blaming another staff member and getting your IT support crew to sort it?

Gaijin, if the security of your operating system has been compromised by virus or trojans best course of action is to save all important files on an external hard drive and then format the computer. In the end you will save time as reinstaling Vista will not take more than a couple of hours and for reinstall the rest of programs you will need just an hour or two more. If you choose to do this renember to disconect the internet conexion to the computer while you install the operating system, conect it just when preparing to download and install programs from internet. Renember to enable the firewall of windows, install an antivirus (Avast is good and free of charge) and install an anti-mallware (Malwarebyte's Anti-Mallware for example is free of charge).
By my own experience formating and reinstaling is the fastest way to get rid of virus and trojans.

Is anyone else getting a fvcked up mp.net page layout? I'm running Firefox, and the only thing I can think of is that I updated NoScript the other day. Is there some way I can roll back to the previous version?

Gracias, zad! A co-worker recommended Avast. He said it cost him something like $40. I paid $50 or $60 for Norton, and it didn't protect me from what I've got.

My subscription for AVG expires in a few days. I am going with Vipre. I have been researching anti virus programs and decided on Vipre when I watched a number of vidoes this guy did on about ten antivirus programs like bitdefender, kerpersky, Viper, ect. He intentionally went to know wesites with maleware and intentionally tried to download viruses from at least ten sources for each of the products. Vipre blocked all and on infected sites it will block your browser from going to that site. It is also light on resources so that it doesn't slow you rig down. Kaperskey was another good one. Some people swear by bit defender but go to their forum and there are literaly thousands of of posts with complaints and help questions. I will go Vipre this year and see how it goes. Also, skyeye has a good recomedation of sandboxie. If any maleware happens to get through it is contained and cannot spread anywhere on your pc such as your registery and so on. Worth looking into.
