That's how I initially applied my thermal paste the first couple times, after reading that exact article. You kind of get a feel for it after a while though of how much to put. I kind of just move the hsf around a bit to even out the spread now. Probably not the greatest idea in the world but it works. Just remember not to put too much or it's going to be counter productive to keeping your temps low. A nice thin layer is generally what you're aiming for.
Hello all.
Looking for some advice on a quieter method of cooling a Intel Core I7 920 than the stock cooler I have on it already? Not looking to overclock it just to make the whole unit itself quiter.
Its fitted in a CM Storm case to a OCZ motherboard with a so I should be able to fit a 120mm fan onto it. Any starting points?
Look here. I just bought a Cooler Master Hyper 212+ for $20.
^^What Token said. You can make things even quieter by downloading speedfan and setting up a custom profile with your fans, assuming you have the time to read up on it of course.
It helps if you do the 4 screws a couple turns at a time when you start until all 4 screws are started. That will keep it from tilting. And course do it in a star pattern like you would with a wheel on a car. And if you don't already have it, download HWmonitor to check out your cpu temps.
I did the diamond pattern for the screws. The heatsink is snug but still can turn a couple of degrees with some more than average force applied to it. I'm hoping I don't have to redo it. That is a huge pain in the ass.
I'm using EVGA's all in one monitor for the temps because I can check CPU and GPU.
I have to config my RAM when I get everything running. I have 8GB Rip Jaws running 9-9-9-24-2t at 1067. I had it running at 1333 but a EVGA tech said to drop it down because of my processor.
It'll move if you push it. It's just the nature of the beast. Nothing to worry about.
HWmonitor does all that too
I assume they're rated for 1600mhz? What processor are you using that limits your RAM to 1067? Never really hear of people needing to drop frequency down before :S.
I have a I7 965X. I have no idea why he wanted me to drop it down. Should I go back to 1333? Link to my RAM is below.

Cheers for the advice.
Just bought one of these:

Along with some new fans for my case, one of them is very loud currently making a nice grating noise.
Got it up and running... for now. My idle temps are 22 C and the cores are 36-38 C. Is that the average for the Hyper, Dling?
I'm getting a new AMD motherboard.
i am torn between these two.....

They are roughly the same price!
which would you choose?????
My 212 kept my i5 760 oc @ 4ghz around 32c at idle and around 50c under full load iirc. My i5 2500k on the other had is sitting at ~38c and ~60c under full load with an oc @ 4.8ghz, with a NH-D14. Your I7 runs hotter than the I5s iirc. What are your temperatures under load? Idle temperatures generally don't matter. Run intel burn test through 5-10 passes and see what your temperatures are like.
