Probably not too crash hot in the CPU department, below or near a i3. GPU performance probably is better than Intel offerings.

Yep. The time is coming. Ran my PC for 5 minutes today and it froze. After a hard reset I went into the BIOS and my CPU temps were all over the place. One minute it's around 28 C and the next it jumps to 70 C or 80 C and then it goes back down. I'm thinking I have a bad core that is running hotter. Fuck me.
Yep. Here's the thing though. 1366 and 2011 i7s are practically the same price. I might as well go to the 2011 because PCI-E 3 isn't being made in new 1366 boards and I'm pretty sure NVIDIA's new GPUs are going to be PCI-E 3 only. So I may as well take the hit, get a 2011 mobo and CPU, instead of keeping 1366 and later on having to go to 2011. Bleh.
Seriously, your posts here make it seems like you've built 4 pc's in the last six months, lol![]()
Guys I need help with setting up my old desktop pc as a NAS device on the home network.
I have three laptops that would be using the NAS. Two of them run WIN 7 and one of them runs Vista.
How should I prepare the desktop computer to be the NAS? It has Win XP installed but I am willing to install Linux distribution if it will be better at serving the task.
I want to completely shut off the NAS from any internet connections other than from the 3 laptops that would be using it.
Can I strip down the desktop PC into the bare essentials? i.e. getting rid of the dvd drives, sound card etc. just keep the hard drives with the graphics card.
How should I format the hard drives?
How do I protect the NAS? Firewall? Anti virus?
I share my network connection with a neighbor so he has a potential to access the NAS as well. How do I block him out? Maybe password protect it?
Technically I've built one (out of the old parts and sold that off) and upgraded one.
And for something news worthy. Intel released a cheaper i7 chip.

Sandy Bridge FTW. I love the 2600k that I have. Almost nearing the one year mark from when I built this beast. But at least they are coming out with a cheaper version, when I saw the price of the 2600K I bought, I nearly cried, but it was still worth every penny spent on it.
Ivy Bridge has been delayed until June it seems.
