I'm aware of that kinney, but I was just throwing it out there in case the guy/girl didn't want to use vlc ^^, (I don't see why someone wouldn't wanna use it, but hey, there are people using Apple products out there so nothing's impossible :P )

Update... SOLVED-ish: (by silentpartner) .. on Win7 a tripple-click will get the whole sentence. (not a perfect solution since there's no way to for example mark a whole youtube address in a longer sentence... but enough for me. And CTRL + clicks on each word works... still annoying but eh so is alot of crap.) Note: Doubleclick+drag mouse over the word works even nicer.

    ---
Copy and paste horsepoo in Windows 7 (something that works in W2K and XP)

Is this just me or... if trying to double click on a sentence that contains a question mark to select it for a copy n paste... Win7 will only mark the text in front of the question mark, or behind it. Never the full sentence. Win7 sees the ? as its own seperate word.

This is happening to me in this editing box for instance. (and notepad, run..)

The text: annoying?behavior can only be doubleclick-marked as annoying?behavior or annoying?behavior

Anyone had any luck with RMA'ing drives to Western Digital? Two weeks of nothingness from them and I am ready to punch babies.

It's about time for my PC's first cleaning. Do you guys have a preferred method outside of the normal methods (Compressed air and such)?

The build up seems to be mostly around the fans, and some very light dust on my GPU. My front panel has dust filters thankfully.

Compressed air for the win. You can try using a soft brush too (borrow your GF/wifes makeup brush when she isn't looking).

In short: computer just stops working. Doesn't boot.
After trouble shooting we conclude it's the motherboard.

We move the graphics card, ram and hdd into another computer.
    Doesn't boot into windows.
    Decide to reinstall XP.
After the restart process you either do nothing...and then just end up with a black screen (i.e. it can't finish the install).
Or you choose boot from CD option and it just restarts the install process (same old story).

Try another couple hdds, same thing.

Finally try another one which had XP already installed on it.
    It boots into XP.
However, can't run firefox or internet explorer (just gives us error).
Says it needs to restart, so we do.
    Never boots into Windows again.
Asks us whether to boot normally, safe mode, last working config etc. ... just gives us a black screen.

We try to reinstall XP...and the same story as above, once it starts the restart process we either get a choice of black nothingness, or Windows Setup.

What to do? This is getting on my nerves.

I had a similar problem installing XP, when it rebooted after initial installation it just went black. I finally figured out it was because default XP didnt have proper drivers for my new(ish) video card...ended up using an older card for the install I think. Eventually torrented an XP iso with SP2 slipstreamed into it and that was that. I think, its been quite a few years.

Hmm, that could be the case.
The weird thing is that it worked once!

Weird, indeed. Maybe dust off an old vid card and give it a whirl for the install and see what goes. Don't forget to reset your BIOS to default, and then set up your boot order too.

Yeah I working with BIOS, checking everything.
The thing is, the only other vid card he has only has a VGA/analog plug and the monitor is DVI.

Mind you, all the components we're using are 5+ years old...AGP cards and PC2700 ram.

Maybe it's just time to let the old thing die... though it's sad, it was running fine.

Unless theres an extra adapter plug layin around, I think you're right... give it a decent burial.

OK peoples... I want to setup a VPN for my accounting program so we can do bookwork at home at nighttimes and such... is there an easy(ish) and secure way to do it? The box at work runs XP and the machine at home runs Vista. Both have ADSL connections and I can get a fixed IP if required.

Yes you likely can set up on connection within the configuration of your router. Fixed IP will make it easier to connect. Got to warn you though that most accounting programs I've ever come across work very poorly over a WAN (MYOB for example will just frustrate the hell out of you). Might want to set up remote desktop on the work machine and once you're connection by VPN, use RDP to access it.

5 years old, I am not especially surprised. The solder used in joints has a tendency to shift and change over time, increasing the likelyhood that something will stop working.
