I have IE8 (I know, I'll get firefox soon), and whenever I start it at first, the window comes up, then about 6 to 8 other windows pop up. I'm running Windows Vista 32 bit, I let my computer install updates, I have antivirus, I browse safe sites, etc. Anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it?

Edit- Just wanted to add that it's only when I first start it, if I close IE8 and then reopen it, it doesn't happen. Only the first time I use IE8 after turning my laptop on. Perhaps it's just the computer getting running (Kind of like how people are groggy when they wake up) and it keeps executing the command to open IE8 windows?

    Dear Geeks

I need a new phone. Of the business options i have, they include the HTC's, Samsungs and Blackberries (which i think our IT guys will say no to). Nokia E72 is there but meh last nokia i had has been painful, which is sad cause nokia used to be the best.

Any thoughts? Looking for a phone that can be used for mainly being a phone, plus email and some browsing. HTC HD2 seems to be a starting point. Although i may need a wildfire or worse to try and get better reception in rural areas. The samsung galaxy S is recommended for rural areas.

Another hardware related issue: I'm currently using Win7 Pro X64, and this afternoon i tried to enable AHCI in the BIOS. While it could be put to AHCI no problem, Windows subsequently refused to boot up. The system recovery tool told me it was a 'bad driver'.. I didn't get at the time it was due to AHCI being enabled, i only figured this out when i tried to enable AHCI again and the same thing happened.

Wasn't Win7 supposed to natively support AHCI?

I didn't realize that my wireless has been WEP encrypted the whole time.
So now I switched to WPA AES.
Is AES more secure than TKIP? (I did some googling and there's huge debates about naming and such but I just need an average Joe answer, yes or no? Read something of software (TKIP) vs hardware (AES) encryption).
I also have the option TKIP/AES (I assume it somehow does both then).

I wish I could go to WPA-2, but alas I have a device which doesn't support it.

And WPA / WPA-2 seems dumb as a chain is only as strong as its weakest link so, it'd still be mostly WPA .... right?

Therefore, I believe WPA-AES is the stongest configuration I can get (as one device doesn't support WPA-2). Is this belief correct?

TKIP is the standard encryption method for WPA, IIRC modern day WPA and WPA-2 are a derivative of TKIP. AES is an incremental improvement over TKIP, so if you're that concerned about security on your home net, use AES wherever possible.

Think I have a couple bad RAM modules, a pair of Kingston 2gb@800mhz on an Asus P5K-E my GF inherited. Windows and BIOS only showing 2gb total, and running them as a single only shows 1gb. Am I looking at 1 dead gb on each stick or is there something obvious I am missing here?

Have you made sure they're in the same DIMM Slot coupling? I accidentally put in one DIMM in A1, and the other in B1 when setting up my motherboard, and it only detected 2gb. If that's not the case, run diagnostics, see what that turns up.

Same slots, and I tried others as well with no difference. Ran Windows Memory Diagnostic too and it said no memory errors were detected.

Sorry this isn't really a request for help or anything, but just something awesome I did last night.

Got a random BSOD after browsing the internet for a bit after getting home from work. Rebooted and when Windows was supposed to load I got the dreaded Jurassic Park blinking cursor. After playing with the bios I realized this wasn't going to fix itself. So after getting some help elsewhere someone suggested using Ubuntu. Burned an Ubuntu Live CD and booted it up. Came up flawlessly, and I was able to set up a network link and back up any data I hadn't backed up recently to my external. Then I found a way to rewrite the Master Boot Record from the Ubuntu console (I couldn't use the XP disc because it wouldn't recognize my RAID or my RAID driver disk). Rebooted and viola, system fixed.

Thought for sure I'd be building a new system next week since I've decided that I'm not redoing any more OSes on this rig. Actually I've had the same install of XP for 6 years. Runs more or less stable... This winter I'll be building a new Win7 machine though.

    Default Question for Firefox users..

I've only been using it for a few weeks, and been nothing but happy. But today something happened:
I downloaded a screensaver from what I thought was a trusted site, and was told to restart Firefox to complete the installation, and when I did, I got this message:
"Proxy server is refusing connection. Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connection."
    I tried:
    re-installing Firefox
    restarting computer
    No effect.

I also scanned the download with Avast!, and found nothing.

I'm a complete dunce about computers, so it's probably something simple. IE still works (obviously, I'm using it now).
Is the problem on my end, or with something else?
    Thanks.

Try Tools, Options, Advanced, Network, click Settings button and select No proxy or Autodetect maybe. Sounds like it was manually set for a proxy that isn't working.

Busted connector somwhere in or on the PCB? At this point i would say they're busted, unless the problem is with your motherboard. Have you tried using them on another board?

Have you tried the connections menu in Windows? See if there is a proxy configured in there, if so, turn it off/remove it.
Look under configuration/control panel-connections and internet-internetoption-connections-LAN.(click the LAN buttun in the connections section)
Another option, if removing FF didn't fix it, is to check under options/preferences in Firefox, click advanced, then go network and click 'configure how Firefox connects to the internet' Then put the proxy dial to 'use system proxy'(if Windows has no proxy settings) or 'no proxy'.
If as you say removing FF didn't fix it and there is no proxy selected in Windows itself, remove the file you downloaded, and do a full system sweep with your virus software.

My sis got a MacBook from a friend (first edition May 2006).
It's got 512 mb RAM and 1.83 Ghz intel core duo processor.

The thing is, she wants to have a clean install but she DOESN'T have the Mac OS X Tiger CD.

    What to do?

I could buy Snow Leopard but then I also need to upgrade the RAM to 2gb, total cost about 70 €s

I can't find any Leopard or Tiger CDs for sale.

    Torrents:
Can't find any Tiger for INTEL cpus out there.

Leopard: Well, it says MINIMUM 512 Mb...not sure if I'm too keen on running on the minimum.

Any other way of achieving a clean install? I.e. get rid of her user settings etc.

There are a few issues like the DVD player not working (though it worked when I tried it) and that the keyboard sometimes stops working, but I believe that's mainly software related, hence wanting to clean install / upgrade.

    Any suggestions?
