It worked both ways, my bro had to make a couple of these walks of shame while I got ice cream.
Once my little bro and I decided to run away from our cruel parents, figuring we were secretly adopted anyway, no one would notice. We packed some clothes, snuck some food out of the fridge and headed off to parts unknown. 5 yrs old and 7, on the road. My bro got half a mile down the road and turned back, I stuck it out until my mom and my brother drove up, and kept pace with me for a mile or so. I got in, shamefaced. My brother had spilled the beans on our assumption we had been adopted. Mom pointed out that if we were infact adopted she wouldn't punish us as much as if we were her real children, and at this point the beatings began.

My Mom had a bamboo cane. I won it at the county fair as a kid, it had a little stuffed monkey hanging from it. She kept the cane and used to strike my brothers and I with it. She still has it actually and frequently threatens to get it out when we are there. I occasionally think about shoving her down the stairs.

My mom threatened to do that a lot. Never actually did. One time I was messing with the radio dial or the air or something, mom threatens to pull over and leave me on the side of the road. I called bull**** and kept screwing with the dials--BAM! Backhand to the face! My nose was bleeding and ****.
She felt worse about it than I did. Milked her guilt for all she was worth.

My Mom used to drive us around in a 72 Charger........it was a BIG car, and my Mom's maybe 5ft tall with shoes on.
If we got too obnoxious she'd get all screamy and threaten to smack the sh!t out of us while she was driving.
It didn't take my brother and I long to comprehend that the teeny tiny old lady couldn't even come close to reaching us in that Titanic sized black barge.
I still remember the angry look on her face swinging and missing, even turned completely towards us pretty much abandoning eyes on the road and the steering wheel to get one in.........I still can't understand how my Mom managed to avoid hitting lots of sh!t.....good times.
All I know is, if my wife drove a Black on Black 72 Charger today in the middle of summer she'd probably get arrested for child abuse............my favorite plastic mauser pistol melted one day in Summer in that pizza oven on wheels.

well, harsh kids need harsh reality check...its not like she ditched them half-***** in the woods where perverts or psycho homicidal maniacs are. she probably went around the block, or drove off to a better vantage point to keep eye on them, whilst still being in relative vicinity.
again, not like she dumped her kid in the trunk and went off to a "hot mom" contest.
Haha. In my kid years (6-12) my mom would use to chase me around with the cable of the iron but only actually hit me once, and let me tell you that was enough pain to last a lifetime... After 12, my mom would try to throw and hit me with anything she could get her hands on (metal brooms, high heels, and potraits where her favorite) since it would hurt her if she punched me (believe me, she tried).
