    Default Vektor CR-21 (South Africa)

    Vektor CR-21

CR-21 - optical sight 1X with aiming reticle shown at left

    Caliber: 5.56 NATO (.223rem)
    Overall length: 760mm
    Barrel length: 460mm
    Weigth: 3,8 kg loaded
    Magazine capacity: 35 rds
Sigth: Telescopic 1X with illuminated reticle

Internally, this rifle is a the ol' good AK-47, or, to be more precise - the Galil. The CR-21 has the same "old AK" style machined steel receiver, trigger and bolt group. Fire selector is a Galil-styled, ambidextrous, and located at the rear part of the gun. Safety switch is button-style, and located in the triggerguard. The receiver is fully enclosed in polymer buttstock, unlike the other latest bull-pup designs, where receivers are integral parts of the stock (or vice versa . On the top of the receiver there is a rails for quick intercangeable scopes. Standart scope is 1X (no magnivication) with light gathering device and illuminated reticle (no batteries required).
If anyone has more photos of this gun or South African soldiers with the gun that would be great please post them.

Dennis, as far as I know, no conventional South African military unit has been issued with this weapon. The standard issue is still the R-4 (Galil), although the Special Forces may have used this one. If so, I've come across no photos/written accounts thereof.

That looks a hell of a lot like the Israeli TAR21.

Yes, indeed. If you look at most "SA produced" weapons, they are nothing short of a locally manufactured verions of a foreign (particularly Israeli) weapon. The standard issue R-4 is essentially the Galil - they look almost identical, and work identically.

Thanks anyway. I to have never seen any SA troops with them. Think it has anything to with the 5.56 round. You would think that SA Forces fight more in the bush and need a bigger round and the .223 is to small.

It Does look alot like the TAR21

    Thanks, Dennis

Dennis, the standard South African R4 is also 5.56mm, so thats not the reason it's not being used. I have no idea what the reason is, though.

The SA army used to use the R1 (locally produced version of the FN FAL) which was 7.62mm. Much heavier weapon and too long for close in work in the bush, although I know many guys who swear by it's "stopping power".

I did'nt realize the FAMAS was considered good!

But since you ask.. how about the real deal:

Steyr Stg.77 AUG assault rifle (Austria)

As I've stated before I'm a huge AUG fan, particularly now with it's new rail system.

    I hate the FAMAS.
Just a question for anyone who has used it before, where is the safety catch/selector swith loacted on the FAMAS?
I've used the airsoft version which has the safety catch located behind the magazine housing!!! In my oppinion that's absolute madness to have a safety catch way back there.

Safety/fire selector (Three positions - Safe/Semi/Auto) is located within the triggerguard, just ahead of the trigger.

Well, at least the FAMAS is better than the Steyr "Suicide Mission" Aug.

Anyone noticed how those new bullpups are all named "21"?
    SAR-21

    TAR-21

    CR21
