I only went with 9mm because of the ability to pick up ammo for it almost anywhere. .40/.45 are good choices, but ammo for them can run scarce depending on where you are.

I think that gets back to individual externalities. We all don't have same needs, operate in the same area, etc. Other thing with a 9mm, it is more adaptable to more people because of the "recoil" factor.

In the 70's the 1911 was rarely chosen because, what I was told, few people could shoot it as well as the Model 19 Smith. Even the talk of moving to a 41 Mag was considered too much pistol for the average shooter.

I have come to the decision that, the opinions are based on many other factors than just the pistol itself and round that it uses.

17+1, 9mm is plentiful over most of the globe, small enough to conceal comfortably, full size enough for most all work. Reliability, survivability, ergonomically it works for me.
The only thing I'd change is that I'd go for the Model 19. I think that the G19 is probably the best pistol in their line. It'll do everything the G17 will do, and it's in a more convenient package.

I was involved in the selection process for our department (back when I was a cop) and initially the chief wanted to go with the G17 for patrol and the G19 for investigators. When we got down to it, we decided that losing .5" barrel length and 2 rounds magazine capacity wasn't any big deal at all. We also strongly encouraged officers to carry their duty gun as their off-duty piece, so the G19 was better suited for that purpose. If the magazine capacity issue bothered folks, there are the +2 floorplates and heck, folks could procure their own G17 magazines.

As far as 9mm vs .40 vs .45 - it's been repeated ad nauseam, but shot placement is the single biggest factor in whether or not someone stops when you shoot them. The 9mm works and has worked since what... 1908? As Lac mentions, 9mm is also pretty much a universal cartidge and is available just about anywhere you'd go. I carried a 9mm and never felt undergunned.

Buck, there is a trainer that espouses that all pistols should be Glocks and all Glocks should be Model 19s. I had a Model 19 (and a 23). They felt just a bit short to me in the grip. In the near future we may be going with G22s with a G23 option. I went over to the local gun store and played with both and again the 23 felt a bit short. A G22/17 is just about the same size as a Sig P229, so it is concealable. But your reasoning of one gun for everyone, especially if it promotes or makes off-duty carry more palatable to the rank 7 file is a good call.

My first issue pistol was a Glock 19, and I liked it a lot.

You do make a valid point about 9mm, Laconian. I just don't think it is as big of a deal for someone in the US. However, for someone who intends on travelling abroad with the pistol (if and where it can be done legally), a 9mm would make a lot of sense, for logistical purposes.

    +1

I've got one, but i really haven't fired it enough yet (a few rounds shy of 150) to give a proper oppinion of it. but it is defenitely easy and comfortable to shoot.

    Default Need Handgun Advice

I have been given a promotion in my job, and am now required to carry a concealed firearm (handgun). The company will supply me with half of the money to purchase and the other half I am responsible.

I have done a ton of research and now am down to a few. I need some advice on which one is the best option.

This is a plain clothes position and need it to be concealed at all times. I would prefer to have something more powerful than a 9 mm but not as powerful as a .45.

    Here are some options.
    Glock .40
Taurus Judge .38 or .410 SG
    Springfield XD .40 - 4" Barrel

    Getting training.

    The glock or the springfield.

the Taurua .410.................. heck no. no no no.

I like wheel guns, they are safer (generally) but can be a little more harder to conceal.

    ^^^^ What James pointed out.

...or model 27, if you want something smaller and more concealable.

I'm thinking about buying pistol. Right now I have few options in my mind.

Option 1: S&W m1911. Copy of classic design from quality manufacturer, .45APC caliber. Down turn is price, cost: 1300€.

Option 2: FN BDAO-9, used but condition described as like new. Cost: 590€

Option 3: Glock 17 or 19 pro. Basically factory "pimped" version made exclusively for Finnish market, over length threaded barrel for silencer, modified sights and some other minor modifications to standard model. Cost: 751€

Option 4: Glock 17 or 19. Standard model. Cost: 598€

Option 5: Colt m1911a1, with US Army stamps, apparently unused. Price: not sure.

Option 6: Actually not so much of option. Norinco m1911a1 or Norinco Big Para. Both are Chinese copies classic Browning design and basically same gun in .45APC and 9mmP. Well cheap as hell, but I'm more than bit concerned over quality as my friends have bad experiences over sh!tty quality of same manufacturers rifles.

9mmP vs. .45APC: pros/cons in this issues here in Finland: 9mmP ammo is cheaper here and purchase license is lot easier to get. But .45 is damn COOL.

This is my first pistol and I don't have too much experience with pistols. I have shot both BDAO-9, regular Glock 17 and regular Glock 19 before, FN in army, a friend has Glock 17 and friend of friend has Glock 19. All those are pretty fun and nice to shoot in my opinion, but I prefer Glock 19 over G 17 little bit.

I love my Glock but do wish she had an external safety.
