Does anyone have any experience with the S&W Airweight in .38 Special?
I'm looking more towards getting a hammerless revolver but don't really know the pro's and con's of going "hammerless". I do know I want one as my chief home defense gun since I believe they are superior in every way to magazine fed hand guns.

my neighbor just purchased one for his wife, she is getting a conceal permit, he has the hammer version, nice double action, very nice, compact, and smooth.

Any reason he chose the hammer vs the hammerless? I would think the hammerless would be better for concealed carry.

Mostly good old target practice and later possibly in some form of practical shooting.

I'd loved to, but currently I don't have enough money.

I would of thought that too, I don't know why he picked it, but after playing with it , I see one advantage, is that you can manually **** the pistol, where with the hammerless, you are left to the double action only.

    That's a carry gun I don't ask, you don't tell

I fondle Scandium and Airweight Smiths on regular base - they are light as hell and are good in need. The only problem I've had with a Smith is their models with adjustable hammer strength - without blue LokTite the tension screw unscrewed itself with recoil, running dry through entire cylinder with 4 out of 7 misfires (not like wheelguns are impervious to becoming paperweights in the wrong time)

I suppose in a gun that small, you'll even feel a 38 somewhat and with a barrel that short, you'd need a recommended +p loads to be a reliable manstopper, 125gr me thinks. (I think Geezah started a discussion on that a while back).

I fired one quite a bit back in the day, my partner had one. I almost bought one for off duty carry but that was right around the time they were switching to semi autos so I waited. He had the hammerless because it was a carry gun and that's what it was designed for.

    Stuka's right +P...

Remington 870 not getting it done for home defense these days?

    It's a dual use item

I just want a revolver that can sit in a drawer for ages and should it ever be needed by the girlfriend....reliable. I myself really don't need a hand gun for self protection unless gang activity is bad and even then common sense is the best tool in the kit box.

I don't own a shotgun as I've never been much of a hunter.

I have a S&W 442, an Airweight hammerless .38SPL. I keep it loaded with Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel. It's nothing I'd call fun to shoot (I got it to be a pocket/belly gun, for when I can't use my normal conealment shirts). I certainly wouldn't recommend it for a house-gun, especially for a possible female user. I would suggest a Ruger GP100, in .357MAG. Much more comfortable and easier to shoot, and more power as well. If you're willing to spend the money (I am) the S&W TRR8 can take a light/laser, and comes highly recommended. One of those two is probably going to be my next purchase, specifically for something powerful I can leave loaded.

For drawer gun, I'd recommend hammerless - don't want your panties jamming up into the transfer bar

    mine:

just add a Hogue Tamer grip, a heat shield, and a jury-rigged 1913 rail on the left side of the forearm, with an Insight M6.

not even OT. MI considers this a handgun.

still? Let me tell you what's gonna happen - you'll take her to get acquainted with it to the range, she'll shoot it twice and then go hold the hand under the ice bag. Then in case of need, it will remind her that it's a trade off between getting clobbered by the invader or the gun Get her something that will both flatter her ability and be pleasant to shoot - like a 686, you carry your cordless sledgehammer

Orionhawk, Pretty sweet, I don't know if those are legal in Los Angles however.

Stuka, I thought of buying her a .22 as well but figured if she needs to use it in the hallway of our place against an intruder I want it loud and proud with a blinding and deafening muzzle blast.
