Thread: Handgun procurement

Tough to beat the HK USP. I'd go for a .45, but a 9 mm is fine too. I personally wouldnt rank anything higher than the HK. The fit makes a big difference. I have large hands, so full size 1911s and the HK fit very well. Another concern is the safety. The HK has a safety and a de-cocker and the Glock does not. It is also double action, which many prefer. With the Glock, you are either carrying the gun with an empty chamber, or you are ready to go with just the trigger safety. Everyone's opinion will be different, but I think the HK is about the best handgun out there. RR

The Glock releases tension on the striker when the trigger is fully released so it is almost a DA when you pull it from the holster. It is hammerless and is technically decocked when chambered and in the holster. When you squeeze the trigger back on your first shot, the striker is tensioned. Then after that each successive shot only needs the trigger relaxed to the point the sear reengages. Almost DA/SA

I am not sure I follow, but then again, I am not a gunsmith. If the hammer is back while the gun is in the holster, I wouldnt call it cocked. For a gun to be de-cocked, at least by my definition, the hammer has to be forward and it is not ready to fire without manually pulling the hammer back (like with a 1911) or pulling it back with the trigger (DA).

Either way, the Glock is a fine weapon, I just think the HK is superior. Also, at least when the HK is empty, you still have a weapon! The Glock feels too light to bean somebody with. There are a bunch of low quality guns out there, and the Glock isnt one of them. I just think the HK is a bit better.

The Glock has a 'spring loaded firing pin' called a striker, it is pulled back and released to strike the primer.

I have not fired an HK but I do agree they have a superb reputation.

OKI went to the gun store, and they have little materiel. Most guns range from $700 to $850 (that one is a Taurus). There was a Springfield .45 going at $750, and they will soon have a shipment of rugers, same price range. I will check another store to see if they got others brands

Rugers aren't bad. Don't pay anywhere near $850 for a Taurus.

Sounds pricey, for about anywhere in the Continental US... Where about in the world are you?

They are on the internet, Philomath Gun Shop, His prices are very very good, and you can get a FFL transfer to a gunsmith near you. Besides no sales Tax in Oregon.
