All you ever needed right here.
On Rhodesia and the war I suggest you get :
War diaries of andre dennison by rt wood,
Selous scouts top secret war by Reid Daily and peter Stiff
Chimurenga by paul moorcroft and maclaughling
The elite by barbra cole,
sabotage and torture also by b cole,
Contact one and two (2 books) paul moorcroft.
for good pics- hand drawn - faces of war by peter badcock
That doesnt put the war and the lies and betrayal into context but is a start.
Political books on Rhodesian war:
I suggest you go back to the beginning:
Start with Sunshine and Storm by f.c selous - this is collectors item - maybe a reference library will help.
Revolt in southern Rhodesia by t.o. ranger
Our guns our votes by Martin meredith
The great betrayal by Ian smith
Mugabe by david smith and colin Simpson
Cry zimbabwe by peter stiff
The struggle for zimbabwe by davis martin and phyllis johnson
The past is another country by martin meredith
the downfall of lobengula by wills and collinridge
with plumber in matabeleland by sykes
The 96 rebellion - bsaco reports
if you get through that and want more email me on this site.
As i was in the war i havent bothered with more war books.
Other can assist. Look at rhodie web sites.
Books written now dont give the full context of why there was a war and the causes thats why i suggest you read lots of history books. They never taught us Rhodies the true history of our country at school. we actually learnt friggin english history - fat lot og ggod that was.
Cheers

Most titles are shown at these sites and then you can see if it is available at Amazon.
Ain't that the truth - spent most of our "history" lessons concentrating on the real important stuff like "The battle of Hastings 1066" etc. Can't begin to tell you all how important that has been in my life...
Mind you... our history teacher at high school was a rugby boff - all we had to do was get him started on rugby and we could pack away our books - perhaps that's why I missed out on the Rhodie history.
Hi everyone
This is my first post.
I also have a keen interest in the Rhodesian Bush War (my parents were from Rhodesia, my Father was an Aloutte 3 pilot).
Does anyone have any info about the various grenades that were used by the RLI, SAS and Selous Scouts? HE grenades, Phosphorous, smoke etc...
Im trying to figure out what grenades are attached to the webbing of these two soldiers in these pictures.
Any information anyone could give would be greatly appreciated.
Scott Newman
Most munitions of this kind were of South African origin, suffice to say that the Rhodesian army made good use of weapons and equipment captured from the terrs.
However not sure of the types of grenades except, HE,WP and fragmentation were inuse as well as the various types of smoke.
The grenades issued to Rhodesian soldiers were fragmentation. Smoke canisters and flares were issued to identify positions. No gook grenades were issued - considered too unreliable. Phos grenades were rifle fired type grenades - not hand held.
Sorry folk - been stoking up my memory ......you are correct! Senior moment.....![]()
Thanks for the reply guys, I appreciate it.
So just to clarify - are you saying the grenades in the above picture are smoke grenades?
To my eyes they look a lot smaller than the smoke grenades Ive seen here in South Africa. Is this the case? Were they relatively small?
Does anyone have a pic of what a Rhodesian phos. grenade looked like?
thanks again
Scott
