While there may have been some kind of exchange program, the RRAF had it's own Parachute Training School at New Sarum (formed in 1961).

From about 1977 onwards the Rhodesian Air Force's Para Training School couldn't handle the numbers of men needed to be para-trained; also aircraft were needed for operational duties. So increasing numbers of men were sent to South Africa for para training. Similarly a number of RhAF pilots did parts of their flying training in SA.

Ahh, what did he do; if you wouldn't mind of course?

Please understand flatdog, most of us here were not in Rhodesia, so we find pictures and post them; All we are aware of is that they are wearing Rhodesian uniforms; nothing more.

(YANKEEBOBB, if it can be confirmed that this man was a traitor, perhaps you could label that picture as such; for posterities sake.)

He actively worked for the CIA and the Reds. His Uncle as well, I recall the Uncle worked in either Special Branch or CIO.

In all honesty I think this is one of the best threads on mpnet. Nowhere have I found such passion and compassion about anything on this forum. Thanks a lot for starting this up...and now onto more pics! I haven't seen any pics of cap badges so here we go!!

    RAR Cap Badge

    Selous Scouts

    RLI Cap Badge

Rhodesian Armoured Car Corps "Black Devils"

    Grey's Scouts

Hope I got all the main army units. I missed the SAS because they're cap badge is the same as all the other SAS units worldwide

I wish this was in high-res. I don't know what most of them are, but hey, this stuff is pretty rare, so you take what you can get.

Thanks for the post sexyhamburger (nice handle as well, lol). I can only speak for myself, but I respect the Rhodesians about as much as anyone can respect anything. I truly believe theirs was a noble, non-racist, cause. I also believe they were as tough as nails. There is some stuff out there, but not much compared to most other conflicts. I hope this thread is useful to those who are just finding out about Rhodesia, and her story.

P.S. YANKEBOBB is the real muscle behind this thread. Most of the credit goes to him. I keep hoping for some old salty Troopies to post their personal stuff, but of course, they have earned the right to cart-blanch in this matter.

It has been alleged that he did. Nothing has ever been proved (or probably will be). He of course denies it. Some people believe him, others don't. What is for certain is that Rich Stannard served in the British Army (including Northern Ireland) then the Rhodesian Army where he was in both the Selous Scouts and the SAS, the latter as an officer. He was awarded the Bronze Cross of Rhodesia. After Rhodesia became Zimbabwe he like most of the regular members of the Rhodesian SAS joined the SADF's 6 Recce Commando, again as a lieutenant. He was awarded the Honoris Crux Silver for his part in the raid on Matola in Mozambique in January 1981. Like many of the ex-Rhodesians he did not stay long in the SADF and he participated in the ill-fated Seychelles coup attempt in November 1981.

Danny Stannard was in the BSAP and CIO. He was involved in foiling an assassination attempt (possibly more than one) on Mugabe in 1980, for which he later got a medal. He remained a senior CIO officer under the Mugabe government. After retiring from the CIO in 1996 he became manager of the Zimbabwe cricket team for a while.

Right, thanks. Makes a lot of sense taking the unbelievable high operational tempo of the Rhodesian Fire Force operations in the late 70s into consideration. There have literally been thousands of operational/combat jumps conducted by the Rhodesians.

Baboon beat me to it, I was going to say nowhere have I found proof of him being a traitor, not to say he never worked with the CIA. Maybe stuff will come out now the the CIA is releasing lots of old declassified stuff on all their medling. I only know of his service as a special forces soldier and his stint with Mike Hoare as stated by Baboon.

As always there are lots of facts not known to all but those more familiar with the subjects we discuss. What sort of info would you have about the subject flatdog? You've got me interested. I Googled all around but could'nt find anything about it besides a couple of the links Baboon posted.

    Thanks for the links Babbon.

Ha, very cool, thanks bro! Amazing little vehicle. The fact that it has less a chance in detonating a mine than a human amazes the hell outa me! Seen it before but never was much interested in it 'til now!

Here's a quote from the article found by Rudolph:

When tested in front of Army, Air Force and Police commanders, the Pookie was driven over a TM-46 landmine without depressing the detonator. Seeking a ground pressure of less than five pounds per square inch, Konschel had achieved three pounds pressure, less than that of the human foot, through his wide soft tyres and the trailing arm suspension of the Kombi. In fact, the Pookie will not even detonate standard anti-personnel landmines

Between 1976 and 1980, the Pookie found over 550 landmines but never detonated one.
