On 12 June, JG74 said good bye to the Phantom after flying it for almost 34 years. They are now flying Eurofighter Typhoons.

Special scheme for the retirement of JG74 F-4s

    More pics here.

Now JG71 remains the only wing in the Luftwaffe still flying the Phantom. They will start the transition to the Typhoon in 2010 and by 2012, the F-4F will be gone...

What will happen to the retired aircraft?
Will they be scrapped, stored or sold?

The F-4 IIs will be scrapped, most of the airframes have endured too many flight-hours for any further use. IIRC one or two will be kept as a testbed at the WTD61 though.

The German air force operates more than 100 aircraft in US airspace, all flying under an US roundel.

Don't want to be the wise guy, just thought it might be interesting to know.

Actually, the Luftwaffe Tornados based at Holloman AFB retained their normal color scheme and German markings.

Luftwaffe-owned T-37s and T-38s based at Sheppard AFB, however, are indeed wearing US markings.

Seems the German Pilots fly with American Kit as well. The German helmets look slightly different. The visor slips into a shield. This is the American version.

Not the Phantoms though. 20th Squadron used to fly the Phantoms till 2004, which were in fact not the Luftwaffe standard's F-4F ICE but F-4E. The squadron continued training process on Tornadoes they had already received in 1996.

Don't forget the Grob training planes. They are all also painted in the scheme of US training planes, but usually show German formation insignias and the NATO rose, here clearly visible on the tail fin again.

As for what our Phantoms will have to expect:

Sad impressions, I insist it's a great looking plane, and above all it's very safe.
