Meanwhile BEL has subdivided its Naval Systems Division in to two separate units - one for the manufacture of radars/sonars and the other for fire control systems. More on this from Defexpo.
And Babus do take advantage of this!the Indian armed forces have fought all wars with technology inferior to the enemy. This was true of 1962, 1965 and even 1971, be it the artillery, tanks, radars or even infantry weapons. Not just our adversaries, but even terrorists have had better weapons than our own soldiers. That we still held our own is a tribute to the valour and leadership of our forces.

Eurofighter Typhoon targets 300 additional orders....
http://www.bharatrakshak.com/NEWS/ne...p?newsid=12365The Eurofighter consortium foresees substantial growth opportunities on the world market, with India playing a crucial role. “We evaluate the global demand for combat aircraft in the next 20 years at around 800 units. For Eurofighter Typhoon we target 300 additional export contracts, with Asia representing a substantial part of these orders”, says Enzo Casolini, CEO of Eurofighter GmbH, adding “Given the developments already planned and the further upgrades we are studying, Eurofighter Typhoon will remain the most modern combat aircraft available on the global market for a long time.”
Bernhard Gerwert, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Eurofighter GmbH and CEO of Military Air Systems, a Business Unit of EADS Defence & Security (DS), underlines “We are well positioned in the ongoing tender for the acquisition of 126 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) because the Eurofighter Typhoon is the ideal answer to the threats that India faces. The aircraft’s outstanding operational performance coupled with low life-cycle costs and a tailor-made industrial partnership offer make the Eurofighter Typhoon a key contender in India’s competition.”
More than 700 orders and over 200 deliveries to the four European core customers as well as to Austria and Saudi Arabia prove that Eurofighter Typhoon is a mature international weapons programme. The signature of the Tranche 3 A contract by Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain in July 2009 reiterated the strong commitment of its core customers. “This milestone secures production continuity for years to come, and forthcoming upgrades will further enhance the aircrafts’ operational performance”, says Gerwert, adding “Now we are keen to phase India into the Eurofighter programme as a true industrial partner. By co-developing cutting edge future capabilities with us, India could play a key role in tapping the plane’s tremendous built-in growth potential. As a production and development partner for future enhancements, India could also customize the Eurofighter Typhoon to its specific requirements.”
In addition to supporting the growth of India’s indigenous defence industry, the four Eurofighter Typhoon partner companies and their 400 suppliers will give India access to an international sourcing network of unparalleled scope. They are confident to meet the 50 percent offset obligation of the Request for Proposal (RFP).
On behalf of the Eurofighter consortium, EADS Defence & Security submitted the Eurofighter Typhoon bid and a comprehensive offset offer to the Indian authorities in 2008. Since then, 25 Memoranda of Understandings (MoUs) were signed to enhance the industrial cooperation with India’s aerospace and defence industry.
On Monday, 15 February, aircraft of the German Air Force will take off from Germany for Bengaluru where the Eurofighter Typhoon will be examined by the Indian Air Force in the MMRCA Field Evaluation Programme. Until March, trials will also be conducted in Jaisalmer and Leh. There, the combat aircraft will demonstrate its desert and high altitude performance.
Eurofighter Typhoon’s deployment to India coincides with the start of DEFEXPO 2010 in New Delhi where its capabilities will be showcased in a unique simulator at the Eurofighter Typhoon stand.
More Arjun orders after comparative trials with T-90s
http://www.bharatrakshak.com/NEWS/ne...p?newsid=12366New Delhi: The Army is likely to place more orders for indigenous DRDO-developed Arjun tanks after completion of the comparative trials it would be put through with the Russian-origin T-90 tanks later this year.
![]()
"After completion of the comparative trials between Arjun and T-90s. We are waiting for it. Then we will decide on future orders (of Arjun for the Army)," Defence Production Secretary R K Singh told reporters here today.
Both the tanks would be put through tests to record their performances in various weather, terrain and night-and-day conditions to determine which one of them is effective in the middle of this year.
The Army, which is at present looking for a futuristic main battle tank for induction and operation after 2020, has already indicated that it would not place any more orders for Arjun apart from the 124 already ordered in 2004.
"The Request for Proposals (as tenders are called in defence parlance) does not state that the orders will be restricted to the 124 tanks," Singh said to a question in this regard.
In the last couple of years, the Avadi-based Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) delivered a total of 45 tanks to the Army to complete a regiment, which is under going conversion trials by personnel at present.
Singh said both Arjuns and T-90s were "good" tanks in their own class and that the former's performance was found to be good, when he visited HVF to witness the tank's production and operation.
Missile maker Raytheon bidding for tank upgrade in India
http://www.bharatrakshak.com/NEWS/ne...p?newsid=12367New Delhi: Raytheon Co, the world's biggest missile maker, said on Friday it and partner Larsen & Toubro have bid for the contract to upgrade 1,000 T-72 battle tanks in India.
defence ministry officials said the government was looking to spend at least $100 million in upgrading the tanks, which India bought from Russia three decades ago.
"The upgrade will increase the lethality of the T-72 tanks," Fritz Treyz, vice president, Raytheon (India operations), told *******.
Ratheon has a tie-up with engineering and construction firm Larsen & Toubro in India.
The upgrades will include weapons and computer systems and enhance its operation by night.
India, one of the world's biggest arms importers, wants to spend $50 billion buying and upgrading weapons over the next five years.
Treyz said Raytheon will also launch the "fish hawk", an anti-submarine warfare weapon system next week in India.
First fleet tanker for Indian Navy launched at Muggian
http://frontierindia.net/first-fleet...ed-at-muggianoToday at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Muggiano (La Spezia) there was the launch of the first of two fleet tankers ordered by the Indian Navy, with delivery scheduled by the end of the year. This vessel is named INS Deepak. Present at the ceremony were Arif S. Khan, ambassador for the Republic of India in Italy, Corrado Antonini, Chairman of Fincantieri, Admiral Franco Paoli, commander of the Naval Department of the Upper Tyrrhenian Sea. First announced at Euronaval in 2008, the order is the first surface vessel India has ever made to a European company and followed a selection procedure with strong international competitors, especially from Russia and Korea.
At 175 metres long, 25 wide and 19 high, the fleet tanker is a supply and logistic support vessel with a displacement at full load of 27,500 tonnes and a propulsion system of two 10,000 kW diesel engines enabling her to reach a maximum speed of 20 knots. Notable features of the vessel are its propulsion system incorporating a shaft with adjustable pitch propellers and a flight deck for medium weight helicopters (up to 10 tons).
Maximum passenger capacity is 250 including crew and additional forces.
Equipped with double hatches the tanker can refuel four vessels at the same time.
In accordance with the new Marpol regulations of the International Maritime Organization regarding protection of the environment, the ship has been built with a double hull. This will afford greater protection to the fuel tanks, thereby avoiding the risk of pollution in case of collision or damage.
Cooperation with India started in 2004 when Fincantieri drew up two contracts with Cochin shipyard for the design of an engine (one of the most powerful non-nuclear propulsion systems in the world), technology transfer and provision of complementary services for the construction of the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC). Furthermore, in 2007 the company delivered the “Sagar Nidhi”, an oceanographic vessel for the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) of Madras, which is already operating off the Indian coast to the great satisfaction of the customer.
Fincantieri considers the East market and the development of cooperation with the high prestige Indian partner to be strategic, as witnessed by two events – the opening in recent years of a representative office in New Delhi and the company’s participation every year at the leading naval fair, “Defexpo”.
The partnership has been successful as the Indian Navy has exercised its option (provided under the original contract) and ordered a second sister fleet tanker, which is under construction at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente (Genoa) shipyard for delivery in late 2011.
India to unveil defence production policy soon
Under the new defence production policy the Indian government would guarantee a minimum order to companies that are involved in the development programme
New Delhi: India plans to unveil its defence production policy in a couple of months which would aim at reducing the dependence on overseas supplies and help in indigenization of its armed forces weapons platforms, said defence production secretary R.K. Singh.
Under the new defence production policy the Indian government would guarantee a minimum order to companies that are involved in the development programme. After the equipment developed clears test trials, the orders will be bid out in such a way that the involved firms get some part of the orders.
India's ASAT Concept A Hybrid Of Agni And AAD
![]()
While India doesn't have a formal anti-satellite weapon programme, the country's top missile scientists revealed this week that they have gradually laid the groundwork for precisely this sort of weapon. In fact, Dr Avinash Chander, director of India's Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL), has revealed that if the government calls upon DRDO to deliver such a weapon, it would take less than three years to first test.
According to Dr Chander, "We have developed technology blocks that can be integrated to create an anti-satellite weapon. What we need is the technology to boost the munition into space, which we have proven very robustly with the Agni programme. And we need a kill vehicle of considerable energy and terminal phase accuracy, which our scientists have proven with the advanced air defence (AAD) interceptor tests. We can put these blocks together and finetune the weapon as an anti-satellite platform. If we are required to, we can deliver this."
DRDO chief Dr VK Saraswat was more circumspect. "We already have a design study of such a weapon, but at this stage the country does not require such a platform in its strategic arsenal. Testing such a weapon also has a lot of repercussions which have to be taken into consideration. But testing is not an issue -- we can always rely on simulations and ground test. We can see in the future if the government wants such a weapon. If so, our scientists are fully ready to deliver it."
