Sometimes it bothers me when i see the USAV program from DRDO.

The Design and Engine ( kaveri ) both are unproven and its a almost 15 T UCAV which makes it in LCA class ..... this looks like a high risk high return approach toward the project.

Right now the armed forces does not have any significant number of DRDO built UAV , The Nishant was procured in very small numbers 15 i think.

The other project is still in testing stage which is MALE and HALE.

Now the USAV add more complexity without having adequate experience in building and operationalising low complexity project like HALE and MALE.

I just hope they dont try to bite more than then they can chew and take it one project at a time and do it well and gradually move up the scale.

India’s Piramal to Invest $20 Million in Blue Bird

Nearing the end of talks with Israeli manufacturers, the Indian pharmaceutical company decided to acquire shares of the Israeli UAV manufacturer

    Arie Egozi

    17/6/2012

Several days after IsraelDefense reported on India’s intentions to invest in the Israeli defense industries, it is now official – India’s pharmaceutical giant Piramal Healthcare will acquire some of the shares of the Israeli UAV manufacturer BlueBird for $20 million dollars.

IsraelDefense reported just several days ago that India is interested in investing in the Israeli defense industries, and that Piramal is conducting meetings with several Israeli manufacturers planning to approach defense tenders in India.

At the end of the talks that Piramal held with several Israeli manufacturers, the Indian company decided to acquire shares of the Israeli UAV manufacturer BlueBird. The Israeli company has refused to comment, but it seems that the final agreement will soon be signed.

The investment will apparently take place via Piramal's US subsidiary. The company plans to establish a defense subsidiary, which may lead to potential investments in additional Israeli companies.

The planned Indian tender will include 500 mini and micro UAV systems that have an endurance of at least 30 minutes and can be operated by one or two soldiers. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has a strong position within the Indian defense establishment, and it will apparently offer several mini-UAV models.

BlueBird, whose shares will be acquired in part by the Indian pharmaceutical company, has already concluded a cooperation agreement with the Indian company Dynamatic.

Stung by Ramesh's remarks,DRDO offers bio-toilets for villages

Not a "defence or strategic news," but a good initiative by DRDO nonetheless.

India Begins $2.2-billion QR-SAM Procurement Effort

MBDA will be pitching the in-development Indo-French joint short-range surface to air missile (SR-SAM) or Maitri for the competition, in the hope that "enhanced synergies" will see a concept weapon get its big break even before its fully operational. It is not clear if MBDA will field any other product. I hear that MBDA has competition from the Rafael-IAI SpyDer, an upgraded version of Raytheon's MIM-23 Hawk or modified SLAMRAAM and the Russian TOR M1 9M330.

It would be nice to see Maitri being pushed to at least a tech demonstrator status. If it achieves the performance parameters, sooner or later it should receive a few orders, being a semi domestic product.

Indian Air Force take delivery of Global 5000

The Indian Air Force have taken delivery of a Global 5000 from Bombardier, from an order originally destined for a Maltese customer.
Arriving at Shannon on Sunday night from St. Louis Downtown, msn 9424 / C-GHVB stayed the night before departing to Tel Aviv the next morning.

It’s unclear if the aircraft is destined for some work with Israel Aerospace Industries in Tel Aviv before final delivery, but it is understood that the Indians have been shopping for a system similar to the Raytheon developed Global Express based Airborne Stand-Off Radar (ASTOR) system deployed by the UK’s Royal Air Force recently in Afghanistan.

^^ While this link says that the bombardiers might be used for airborne stand off radar, an earlier Hindustan Times report said that it is meant to replace older RAW assets (for which a global RFI has been issued).

Default 20 Naxalites killed in encounter with CRPF

In a major crackdown by CRPF, at least 20 Naxalites, including a woman, were killed in a fierce overnight encounter in the dense jungles of Dantewada in Chhattisgarh that left six jawans wounded.

The encounter, which took place in the forests of Silger, an uncharted Maoist zone between the Naxal hotbed of Jagargunda and Basaguda in Bijapur district of Bastar region, was launched on Thursday night in a joint operation by over 300 CRPF and State police personnel from three directions.

Seventeen bodies of the ultras have been recovered from the spot, Chhattisgarh ADG (Naxal operations) Ram Nivas said, adding the combing operations were underway and the toll may rise.

    http://www.defenceiq.com/army-and-la...survivability/

As we await the outcome of the first phase of India’s Futuristic Soldier As a System (F-INSAS) programme, in the first of a series of articles Defence IQ casts an eye over the new features set to revolutionize Indian infantry. First up: Survivability.
This is the ‘don’t be penetrated’ layer of the survivability onion. Other areas of the F-INSAS programme incorporate the ‘don’t be targeted’ and ‘don’t be hit’ sections, but when these two barriers are broken down the survivability aspect of a soldier’s kit becomes his first line of defence.

Hooghly dry run sets NE stage for BrahMos
Unit That Will Form Third BrahMos Regiment Uses River For Brahmaputra Simulation
    Jayanta Gupta TNN

Kolkata: An Army unit that will be deployed to the Northeast before long as the third BrahMos regiment has set up base on the outskirts of Kolkata and is using the Hooghly channel for simulated trials.
The supersonic missiles, two regiments of which have already been delivered to the Army, have a range of 290km and can move at speeds of Mach 2.8. The third regiment is to be deployed in the Northeast along the Line of Actual Control.
“The supersonic missiles will add punch to India’s military set-up in the Northeast. It will be an effective deterrent. There are high mountain ranges along the LAC and if India was to ever consider a strike into China, the best route for the missiles would be along the Brahmaputra channel. The unit that will ultimately form the third BrahMos regiment has been placed strategically on the banks of the Hooghly near Kolkata,” a source revealed.
“By the time they are relocated to the Northeast, the unit will have a fair idea of how to handle the missiles so they reach enemy territory undetected along the Brahmaputra that flows into Arunachal Pradesh from China,” the source added.
Due to the lack of mountain radars, not much is known of the movement on the Chinese side. According to officials, the mountain ranges along the LAC provide cover to the Indians as well. “Just as we are blind to the goings-on and troop movement on the other side, the Chinese are in no better position,” another source said.
“According to our estimates, any air or missile attack that the Chinese consider will be along the Brahmaputra channel as such movement is very difficult to detect. We are now thinking on the same lines. If India were to launch a retaliatory attack on the Chinese, it would have to be along the Brahmaputra,” the source added.
Though the channels of the Hooghly and the Brahmaputra don’t exactly match, the Army is trying to give its officers and men a feel of how to operate the supersonic cruise missiles along a river. Just like the Brahmaputra, the Hooghly too has several bends that will have to be negotiated by the missile on its way to its target.
BrahMos missiles have the capability of flying at a height of barely 10 metres and strike surface targets. The Army wants the missiles to skip the surface of the river to avoid detection by enemy radar.
Incidentally, the distance from Kolkata to the estuary point (in the Bay of Bengal) along the Hooghly is 148km. The officers can set mock targets on either bank and carry out simulated strikes. This will make their job easier if the need arises to use the missiles for real. The Army unit also makes use of small- and medium-sized vessels to move along the Hooghly for closer inspection and setting of targets.
“The Army has gone in for the Block-II variant of the BrahMos, which has target discrimination capabilities. The ground systems and the missiles of this variant are more advanced and can carry out ‘fly and forget’ attacks on selected targets,” the source said.
Each BrahMos regiment comprises 65 missiles, 5 mobile autonomous launchers on Tatra vehicles and 2 mobile command posts. The Navy has already inducted the BrahMos and has fitted them on most frontline battleships. Efforts are now on to develop BrahMos variants that can be launched from submarines and aircraft.

I wonder if such serpentine intakes has any impact on the AOA for supersonic aircraft , does it limits AOA in any way ?

Although stealth wise it would work very well.
