    Janes, June 12:

Dassault being "relatively quiet in public " is not a sign they are losing ground, they usually did it that way.

Indian aircraft carrier enters sea trials as navy eyes Rafale
    FlightGlobal, June 12

Russia has commenced sea trials involving the Indian navy's refurbished aircraft carrier the INS Vikramaditya, as sources suggest the service could consider a future acquisition of the Dassault Rafale.

Originally built for Russia as the Admiral Gorshkov, with a maximum displacement of 43,500t, the refitted and modernised vessel left Severodvinsk in the north of the country on 8 June for open-sea trials, preceeding its delivery to India in December. Once operational, the Vikramaditya will be capable of carrying 30 to 34 aircraft, including RSK MiG-29K deck-based fighters.

Sources say the Indian navy is considering the carrier-capable Rafale M as a possible acquisition, with a potential cost benefit to come from the air force's pending deal for 126 of the type to meet its medium multi-role combat aircraft requirement.

Already operational with the French navy and similar in size to the MiG-29K, the Rafale M could potentially be operated from India's future ski-jump-equipped domestic aircraft carriers and offer a greater operational capability than current Russian aircraft and India's Aeronautical Development Agency Tejas naval fighter.

India's interest in new naval fighters stems partly from China's ongoing test work with the aircraft carrier Shi Lang, which will be capable of deploying locally-built versions of the Sukhoi Su-30.

Sagem to supply IR seekers for MBDA's Mica missile
    Sagem, June 13

Sagem (Safran group) today signed a contract with MBDA to supply nearly 200 infrared seekers for Mica air-to-air missiles.

Developed and produced by Sagem, the Mica IR seeker is a key to the missile’s operational effectiveness. Furthermore, the seeker also functions as a sensor providing tactical information to the flight crew, because of its high sensitivity, powerful imaging algorithms, bispectral imagery, automatic acquisition of all targets, ability to lock-on before or after firing, discrimination between targets and countermeasures.

Sagem produces Mica IR seekers in its Poitiers plant in France. The infrared system uses an array developed and produced by Sofradir, a jointly-owned company of Sagem and Thales.

RAFALE INTERNATIONAL Sponsors Academic Seminar in Sao Paulo
    Defesat.net, June 13

French consortium enhances academic and industrial cooperation in Sao Paulo

The consortium RAFALE International (formed by the companies Dassault Aviation, Snecma and Thales), sponsored a BRAFWARE seminar , held in conjunction with the Brazilian Association of Aeronautics (AAB) and the Brazilian Space Association (AEB) in the Brazilian Aerospace Memorial, between 28 and May 31.

The initiative aims to continue academic cooperation and aerospace research between Brazil and France, as part of industrial cooperation that integrates the French proposal for Brazil. France is the only competitor of the F-X2 offering to share technology without restrictions for the Brazilian government, businesses and local organizations. The design of technology sharing and counterparts will cover more than 160% of the purchase of the aircraft.

The BRAFWARE (Brazilian Workshop on French Aerospace Research and Engineering) was founded in December 2011. The network comprises leading companies of the aero industry segment, such as Embraer, Helibras, Snecma, Thales and Dassault, as well as large academic institutions such as ISAE, ENSTA, ITA, UFABS, USP, UNICAMP and UNIFEI. Among its objectives are stronger ties between universities and businesses through an ongoing exchange with students graduate and aid in the development of ambitious research projects in the aerospace field.

Stoufflet Bruno, vice president of research and development of Dassault Aviation, said during the event the European initiative called Clean Sky, which is dedicated to developing new technologies for green aviation, within a project involving more than 400 academic and industrial partners Europe. Moreover, the French consortium introduced the model of "competitive clusters" as a way to enhance cooperation among agents in the aerospace industry.

During three days, the BRAFWARE workshop brought together more than 120 participants from Brazil and France. The event has successfully contributed to motivate possible future projects and strengthen strategic partnerships between the two countries. The Consortium RAFALE International has already enabled the signing over 70 agreements with more than 50 Brazilian companies or organizations.
