According to the Mujahideen Youth Movement (MYM) [al-Shabbab] spokesman Muqtar Robow Abu Mansur on 1 May, the group's leader Adan Hashi Ayrow was killed in a missile strike by the US last night, along with Muhidin Ma'alin Umar, another MYM official. He said the attack occurred on a house in Dhuusa Mareeb in the Galguduud Region of Somalia. Mansur said, "We are telling the enemies of God that we will be on that same path which shows that we are on the right path and close to God, and that we are on the right path in true Jihad. It's something of a tradition for British soldiers to wear soft cover on patrol as a sort of hearts and minds thing. However, given that this guy has his rifle in the crook of his arm, a pistol at his side, and a bloody great uparmoured AFV behind him, he's not exactly "softly softly". So I don't really get it either.

Folks,

They are Spanish Legionaries. Real hard-core ultra-conservative Catholic military force. In the past they were the "Spanish Foreign Legion" (very few non-Spanish though) but after Franco died and democracy returned they were limited recruitment to Spanish citizens -- ie although that is changing to where those who are members of nations whose nations use to be part of the Spanish empire can join (which they call the "3rds") and there is some talk of allowing any person whose citizenship is EU can join.

Their Motto is -- serious! -- "Long Live Death" and their anthem song is "The Bridegroom/Boyfriend of Death". The "Bridegroom/Boyfriend" term depends on who in Spain is doing the translation from Spanish to English -- ie conservatives in Spain say "Bridegroom" and the liberals say "Boyfriend". It is sort of an pride/insult item between the two groups in Spain.

Finally, if you want to see a major yearly ceremony of the SL that explains all the above see the video at the link below. Make sure you watch till at least around 5:30 minutes. You will understand what I mean by "ultra-conservative". They are singing the song I referred to.

The anthem song is "Tercios Heroicos" (legionaires to fight, legionaires to die) "El novio de la muerte" is another one of the great legionaire music but no the anthem. The parachutist units of the Army also have a great tradition from the Legión, every parachutist is still a CLP Caballero Legionario Paracaidista, the legionaires only CL

in the thread can check it out.
