That's ****ed up. He was convicted of war crimes after having admitted that he had killed civilians. He should have been sent away for life, or better yet hanged.
Vassili Kononov was a leader of partisan group, which entered the village of Mazie Bati. Five villagers were shot and four burned alive with their houses. One woman who perished was pregnant. Kononov says that some of the villagers helped the germans in annihilating an another soviet partisan group.
Oh, and the court ruling was a close one - 4:3. Sweden, Iceland and Latvia were against dropping charges.

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg is a Council of Europe Organisation. It has nothing to do with the EU except being on the same subcontinent. I think modern Europe is too cowardly to attempt to give justice for the victims of communist murderers, to be quite honest.
They're just as dead whether they were killed by a Nazi or a Communist...
