    Unity of Effort
    By Sgt. Daniel Schroeder
...Since Task Force Gunfighter has worked with Task Force 66, 2nd Commando Regiment, the combined task force has completed approximately 25 missions a month, provided security for four to five patrol bases, conducted more than 50 special forces operations, and inserted more than 1,000 troops during air assault missions.

“Our partnership has enabled us to provide security extending from TK to Bagram Air Field,” said Capt. R, platoon commander, Task Force 66, 2nd Commando Regiment, who cannot be identified due to security reasons. “Gunfighter support was critical to enable us to execute deep strike missions and direct action particularly deep into enemy held territory.”...

    Wounded soldiers return to Australia

    AAP
    May 17, 2012 5:13PM

TWO Australian special forces soldiers wounded by an insurgent bomb blast have returned to Australia for further medical treatment.

Defence said the two soldiers were in a satisfactory condition and would continue to receive specialist care.

A third Australian special forces soldier wounded in the same improvised explosive device explosion on May 3 is expected to return to duties after a period of rest at the Australian base at Tarin Kowt.

Special Operations Task Group commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel J (initial only for security reasons) said the mission in which the three soldiers were wounded turned out a success.

That's the Brit designation, we don't call them that, it was a SR98.

Wartime issue 57 feature article: The falling leaves of Tizak

In June 2010, Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith of the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) was nearing the end of his fifth tour in Afghanistan when his troop left Camp Russell at the multinational base at Tarin Kowt in Uruzgan province to strike Taliban insurgents. Roberts-Smith was second-in-command of an SAS patrol, up to five of which make up an SAS troop. In turn, the troop was part of the 60-strong SAS squadron that, together with a commando company of about 160 men, formed the Special Operations Task Group at Camp Russell. Both the SAS and commandos mentor a provincial response company of Afghan police that operates with them.

In January 2011, Australians learned that Roberts-Smith’s actions on that June day had made him the second Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross for gallantry in Afghanistan. Trooper (now Corporal) Mark Donaldson, also of the SAS, had been awarded the first, two years earlier. Like Donaldson, Roberts-Smith has generously given his Victoria Cross on permanent loan to the Australian War Memorial, where it is displayed in the Hall of Valour. In this interview, he speaks at length publicly for the first time about the circumstances that led to the award.

How did the action come about?
On 10 June 2010 we began what we call a large-scale disruption operation, by sending the commando company into the Shinazef Valley, an enemy stronghold in the Shah-Wali-Kot district in northern Kandahar. We were confident that special reporting would establish the location of the enemy commanders when they began to respond. Our SAS troop, which was on standby at Tarin Kowt, would then go after them.

To make sense of the pics.

The Australian Army’s 1 Commando Regiment conducted Exercise Rebel Challenge at the Puckapunyal Military Training Area during the period 20-22 December to train the Rabo Direct Melbourne Rebels Super XV rugby union team as part of their pre season build up program, and to help them identify leaders within their senior player group. 1 Commando Regiment conducted the arduous leadership based activity for approximately 40 hours to test the Rabo Direct Melbourne Rebels teamwork and decision making under physical and mental stress in unfamiliar environments. Thirty senior players and coaching staff from the club took part in the training. The Australian Army is renowned for its ability to indentify and develop leadership qualities within a group environment, and has successfully conducted similar leadership activities for professional sporting teams from a variety of disciplines.

Diggers wounded in drug lab raid in Helmand province, Afghanistan

    Ian McPhedran
    The Daily Telegraph
    June 06, 2012 12:00AM

TWO Diggers and an Afghan interpreter were shot during a fierce 14-hour assault on an insurgent drug lab in Helmand province.

One of the Australian special forces troops is in a serious condition and is being transferred to the Landstuhl regional military hospital in Germany for specialist treatment.

The second Australian soldier and the interpreter were in a satisfactory condition in a field hospital on Monday.

Troops from the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) based at Camp Holland near Tarin Kowt are increasingly deployed outside Oruzgan because most insurgent leaders there have been killed or have moved to neighbouring Helmand or Kandahar provinces or across the border to Pakistan.

The Diggers have killed hundreds of al-Qaeda and Taliban insurgents since the Afghanistan operation began in late 2001.

Some operations have claimed dozens of insurgent lives and countless "hunter-killer" operations have been conducted targeting insurgent commanders, bomb makers and drug runners.

In the latest battle a combined Australian and Afghan force captured...
