PW Botha was one of the last pro-apartheid era presidents to rule South Africa. Under his leadership the country fought the most intense battles of the Border War and internal opposition. Many still hate the man as a last symbol of apartheid, but he did what was needed at the time. And contrary to popular belief, he brought down many of the apartheid laws like the hated pass laws, which restricted movement by non-whites, and many other laws enacted from the 1940's-1960's.
