I just read over at "FlugRevue" that a Bundeswehr contingent is over in New Mexico right now, testing the NH90 and Tiger in a "climatically realistic environment" for later deployment in Afghanistan. During the same occasion the Minister told news sources about the security situation in RC-N. According to him hostile activity in the area is 60% off from 2010, which used to be the worst year in the north. While this seems like a success it comes with a bad aftertaste: A more resolute approach right from the start could've saved a lot of lives and rendered these two years of struggle unnecessary.
Damn I always forget to keep track of recent developments and incidents with relevance to this thread.
Anyways... German forces were ambushed with small arms and RPG fire a couple of hours ago, most likely in the badlands bordering the restive Chardara district of Kunduz province. 2 soldiers were wounded in action and severe material damages were sustained.
A speedy recovery!
Rumor has it that actually three soldiers have been lightly wounded in the ambush, but will stay in Kunduz and return to their unit.

That even made it into the news on N24 but only because the minister had said it would be safer in Afghanistan than last year and now everybody needs to know that he was wrong.

Bonn — The German military will extend for two more years its leasing contract with Rheinmetall Airborne Systems on two unmanned aerial systems for its mission in Afghanistan, , the company announced.
“The volume of the order prolongation amounts to about 75 million euros for the period from October 2012 to October 2014,” the company said in a statement.
Rheinmetall Airborne Systems is a joint venture of EADS’ defense and security subsidiary Cassidian, and German company Rheinmetall.
