It's been announced that Colonel Georg Klein, who commanded the Kunduz Provincial Reconstruction Team in 2009 and also gave the order for the highly controversial September 4 bombing run, is about to be promoted to Brigadier General.
It's good to see they ignored the political pressure and didn't let him down.

Let's wait until it is done. The news today seemed to get ready for another ****storm to fill the summer slump. The "best" one (ARTE or NTV I think it was) made it sound like he bombed 100 civilians for ****s and giggles. I'm sure the usual suspects will happily jump on the wagon soon, too.

Anyway, kudos to Colonel Klein, I for one think the promotion is very well deserved and since he was cleared of all charges(!) there's no reason he shouldn't be promoted for political reasons.

Holy moly... the places we could get to when newspapers finally started to screen the commentary sections of their online issues!

It´s not so much about content, but about people voting yea or nay towards Bw related topics. And some votes are even invalid, due to "impertinent accusations and allegations". It´s about statistics and tendencies.

While I approve Zeit's efforts to keep the commentary section clean, I am mad as hell that it is even necessary.

The commetary section is the only way to puplicly criticize a reporter and get his facts straight (see mp net contributions). Otherwise an article is at its worst published opinion.

I think you misunderstand me. I am mad at my "fellow" Germans for being such uneducated, ideology-driven assholes who seem to like nothing more than to insult soldiers as murderers, fascists and Nazis where ever they can. They are a minority, sure, but a very loud minority and as long as the majority stays silent, these bastards won't shut up.

The 1/2012 issue of Zu Gleich, the magazine of the German artillery, includes a few articles about German ISAF soldiers in Afghanistan. It's hosted by the Freundeskreis der Artillerietruppe e.V. and available here: http://freundeskreis-artillerietrupp...eich012012.pdf (PDF, in German). Older issues of the magazine can be found on their internet site as well.

    128 pages, 24 MB. Worth a read.

As much as I dislike the Taliban I have very little sympathy for Klein ... he flat out lied to our allies and willfully disregarded his orders and clear, unambiguos rules of engagement set down by his superiors. Amazing that he is about to get promoted.

That is a willful assertion planted by the media and opposition politicians.

Time to resume work here (whenever this thread disappears from page 1 I forget that it exists):

Around 3:00 pm our time German forces patrolling the "Highway Triangle" of Baghlan province got in a heavy firefight about 27 kilometers to the northwest of combat outpost "OP North". Even though there were no German casualties it is said some attackers were apparently wounded or killed but got evacuated by other insurgents before anything could verified.

A German soldier has been wounded by a gunshot in the back, but no hostile forces were involved. The soldier informed his relatives himself after the surgery. Investigations pending.

IED attack on German patrol. One Dingo damaged, but no soldiers wounded. Reinforcements were deployed and the damaged Dingo recovered.

German engineering FTW! It's amazing how many lives we have not lost to IEDs.
