Default US ship to visit Russian naval base of Sevastopol in the Black Sea on sept. 1st

MOSCOW, August 30 (RIA Novosti) - A U.S. vessel, involved in delivering aid to Georgia, will visit the Ukrainian port of Sevastopol, used by Russia's Black Sea Fleet on September 1, a source in the city administration said on Saturday.
The U.S. Coastguard cutter Dallas, which recently delivered humanitarian aid to Georgia's Black Sea port at Batumi, will make the visit to Sevastopol, which Russia leases from Ukraine, at the invitation of Kiev.
"The ship will pay a working visit to Sevastopol on September 1. The Dallas will arrive in Sevastopol from the Georgian port of Batumi," the source said.
Tensions between Russia and the West have intensified after a build up in the Black Sea of U.S. and NATO naval vessels delivering humanitarian aid to Georgia. In an apparent response, Russia sent a group of warships, including the Moskva missile cruiser to Sukhumi, the capital of Abkhazia.
Russia's Black Sea Fleet uses the Sevastopol base under agreements signed in 1997. Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko announced earlier this year that Ukraine would not extend the lease beyond 2017.
Yushchenko signed a decree earlier this month requiring prior notice of all movements by Russian naval vessels and aircraft from the Sevastopol base in the Crimea. The decree is not has not yet come into force, but Russia views it as a provocation and is likely to resist any Ukrainian attempts to restrict the deployment of its navy

Americans and Russians are yelling at each other over Georgia but still coopearate. That's a good move. The Black Sea won't turn hot hopefully.

Exactly. And because Crimea has ethnic Russian majority seeing itself part of the Russia (rightly so, if you ask me), this move is equivalent to sending US ship to visit South Ossetia (if there was a naval port).

Personally I think Yanks/Yankees and Russky/Russkyies are little negative... at least I use frequently Russky/es those days not to offend, but not in a 100% positive manner.

    The title is misleading.

Sevastopol is a Ukrainian naval base, mutually used by the Ukrainian and Russian Navy under terms.

It's a Coast Guard Ship. If the Russian's take it as a serious threat it's completely laughable on their part.

Also, for what it's worth, I am from the "southern" part of the United States, I am NOT a Yankee.

On the serious note, I think both sides are trying hard to avoid any potential conflict. It will not do us nor the Russians any good in the long run. IMHO, Clinton's bumbling foreign policy in the Balkans was one contributor to this ongoing mess we're in now.

In Sevastopol you will see mass protest actions in this case.
