    Ra'd

The Ra'd is an evolution of the SSN-2 (Styx) / HY-2 Seersucker ("Silkworm") already in Iranian service. It features a jet engine and DB-38 homing radar, and has a range of 350 kilometers.

Interesting pics thanks ! (no high res or more pics ?)

24 F1EQ and F1BQ flown over from Iraq during the 1991. Most of them are now operating from Mashhad AB (12 aircrafts could be seen on Mashad airport). According to some sources theses F1 are used by the Pasdarans' (IRGC) Air corps to fight drug smugglers.

One F1BQ crashed in 2000 and another (unknown type) shot down on the Iran/Afghan border by a MANPADS (Stinger ?) used by local narco warlords in 2001.

    Northrop F-5 "Freedom Fighter"

    From MEHR

    From Fars

    From other sources

Some 75 examples of the Northrop F-5 type fighter are believed to be flying with the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force. It serves as the basis for Iran's indigenous fighter types, the Azarakhsh and Saegeh. Bottom photo taken at the 2008 Military Day in Tehran.

The capability of conduct naval assaults is very limited. AFAIK the Iranian Navy should have 1 Naval Infantry Brigade and a few dozens of hovercrafts...

    From MEHR

The Islamic Republic of Iran Navy operates six Wellington BH-7 hovercraft and eight SRN-6 hovercraft.
praticaly they don't have blue water capabilities lol how they think they can compet with a modern enemy in the battlefield (like the usa?!?)

Are the Hawk and Rapier still in use? No problems with spareparts?
Is Iran satisfied with the Thor M1?

yes iran still uses upgraded Hawks and Rapier

Rapier is UK`s primary airdefense weapon

"It remains the UK's primary air-defense weapon after almost 35 years of service, and is expected to serve until 2020"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapier_missile

its still a very good air defense system

also hawk system is still very usefull

Rapier good? It has a range of 7km and ceiling of 3km... That is way too little.

Nope its outdated.. It entered service in 1971... There are tons of other more mobile SHORAD's that are better then Rapier.

In many ways I find it amazing (maybe it is good Iranian communication skills) that page after page we are looking at military hardware that in other countries have been in the bone yard for several years, but in Iran (and by its supporters) one can parade all this stuff as it was the latest and the best there is.

It is enough to paint blue, add on a tail to a F5A that has the same age as me in order to make it jump several generations and even become a serious treat for modern western fighters.

It is enough to put a 14.5 mm on a poorly manufactured speed boat in order to make it a serious treat for the US Navy. Nobody is even ashamed when they pretend that it has stealth capabilities.

It is enough to repaint and install diesel engines in to Chinese T55 built decades ago in order to make it a major industrial achievement. We even admire photos of the “factories” that are merely big hangars and think they look so cool.

When the Iranians manufacture a fiberglass light helicopter just like many Americans makes themselves in their garage, it should be admired and considered as an achievement and photos are proudly displayed.

I have worked in the Iranian industry for many years and I think that I know quite well their strong and weak points (obviously there are both). But I must admit my pure admiration for their capability of “selling” BS as if it was the real thing, or maybe it is just that some guys desperately wants to believe it.

Rapier is in the same class and generation as Crotale, SAM-8 and Roland 2. Roland 2 have 6 km range, while Crotale and SAM-8 have 12+ km range. As I read China sell to Iran their version of Crotale and don't mix Crotale with Crotale NG.

I agree. For semi mobile SHORAD system with this kind of guidance, this range is really to short, especially if we have in mind that some MANPADs like Igla-s and Mistral have 6 km range and work passively. I think here Iran made good move to produce the new generation of chinese MANPADs, which could do this job better than Rapier. Anyone know what is the status of RBS-70 in iranian army?

    Iran has Tor-m1

which is a much superior short range anti-air defence system than rapier
