All my sources point to him receiving a MANPAD hit from a Georgian weapon on the left engine, then flying back over Tskinval it received a second hit that took out the right engine as well. Pilot bailed, was picked up by helicopter. Soon after Ossetians started claiming they shot down Georgian Su-25, leading to people thinking it was SO MANPAD that took it down.
The only Su-25 that the Georgians shot down was by radar guided missile, and the pilot did not survive.
Have not heard any conlcusive evidence about the Russian pilot being shot by Ossetians though.
