    Default Sec. of State poll

Who do you think will/should be Secretary of State in the new administration?

My guess is that Obama and Richardson made a deal many months ago before the endorsement and all this talk of Hillary is just to make it seem as if she were being seriously considered.

Of course that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Personally, I think Richardson will be a better choice given his past experience whereas with Clinton, there is always that husband lurking behind the curtain. But I really don't know who Obama will decide on.

Are new administrations required to replace current appointees? I was just under the impression that Condi is doing a good job as US Sec of State...

He can choose whoever he wants, however I can't imagine him staying with ANYONE remotely connected to the Bush Administration.....having said that IIRC there was talk at one time about retaining Gates as Secretary of Defense.

I've met Bill Richardson when he was US Ambassador to the UN. He was involved with the Dayton Accords at that time.

Bill would be my top choice. He's fluent in Spanish and French, as former Sec. of Energy he knows alot about Nukes and he knows high level North Koreans on a first name basis from his days as a mediator.

The key issue at the State Department is low morale due to being understaffed and over committed.

Every member of the Cabinet, the US Marshals(the actual Marshal, not the DUSMs), the heads of many depts/agencies/bureaus are Presidential appointees. Some require Senate approval, but many serve at the discretion of the POTUS. The one major guy immune is the Director of the FBI - he/she is appointed for 6 year terms.

Richarson would be a good choice. The talk-radio folks are saying he would pick Sen Clinton only to keep her out of the 2012 race, but I don't see how that works. She can resign to run for Pres.

Bill Richardson gets my vote.Bill Clinton 'd be running the US foreign policy on the down low if Oby appoints Hillary sec. of state.

There is a feud going on between the Clintons and Richardson. This stems from his early endorsement for Obama.

Obama is a keen admirer of Linclon. He may want to follow his example of appointing political enemies within his administration.

One way to include both Richardson and Hillary is to appoint one as Nat. Security Advisor at the White House and the other as Sec. of State located in Virginia.

I would not mind Richardson as Nat. Security Advisor as he could focus more on policy rather than administering a large bureacracy.

I do hope Obama considers a role for McCain.

    If Obama is smart.

He would send Bill Clinton as US Ambassidor to Beijing.

This appointment would keep Bubba out of DC, but project a positive US image in China. Sending a former head of state to China sends a message to the PRC they are valued. On the otherhand, Bill Clinton is more popular than Hu Jintao and would capture headlines where ever he goes.

Sending Bill Clinton to China would mitigate sino-centric nationalism.

During the Democratic primaries, I initially supported Bill Richardson. Seems like a no-brainer.
Hillary Clinton is definitely qualified, but I wonder about her baggage and ability to work under Obama.

Same here Gaijin. He was the most qualified candidate on the Democratic side IMHO.

I put in for Clinton. SecState is the top diplomatic position - after the President, America's face to the world. Hillary Clinton is known and respected around the world, and as good as Richardson might be, we've hardly heard of him by comparison.

Between the two listed, my gut response is Bill Richardson. I just don't trust Hillary (think of the POWER!!) Clinton. I don't have any negative opinions about Richardson. Hillary, on the other hand ....

Of course he could go with the Godfather line of thinking: "Keep your friends close and keep your enemies even closer."
