We uses german tanks since the '60's (all Leopards tanks avaible, but since 1996 only the Leopard 2A5/A6 are current), and we use the FN MAG as co-axial MG, and on the rooftop of the turred.

I saw on Discovery something about the Australian SAS, and they used the M60 (and SLR's) . Is the M60 still in service, or is it obsolete now?

the new m60e4s are nice guns, the seals loved them and the italians just adopted them. so it is possible that the sasr use them. the offer most of what the mag can but in a lighter package.

We were using the M60, but when it needed replacing all that was available was the M60E3, and it really wasn't designed for sustained fire.. from what i heard there was numberous cases of barrels drooping because they weren't heavy enough.

An instructor told me that had the original M60 been available, its possible that we would have just bought more, but there wasnt, so we got the MAG 58. Theres still a crapload of M60 spares around though, so its not unusual to see MAG 58's with M60 bipod legs

I'm pretty sure the MG-3 is only in use on the Leopard, and of course there is a fair few M-2HB's around in the Cav / Light Horse regiments (APC's / LAV's).

Theres also talk of bringing in 20/25mm at the battallion level for infantry, and moving SFMG's down to company level. I dont think they've decided on anything yet though.

Not trying to be a 'two ****' but we're in the process of moving 84's and SFMG kits down to section level.

No worries at all, i wasn't aware of it.. Can you give any more details ? Are they actually disbanding the DF sections or just converting them to Javelin ?

Still test and adjusting so to speak. We've had .50cals on soft mounts for a couple of years, we're told AGL's are in the pipe line and the contract for Jav was signed in december. The exact TOE has yet to be worked out but at this stage it looks like each mounted rifle section will have,

    5xIW Steyr
    2xM203/Steyr
    2xC-9
    2xP226
    1xL7A1 + SF kit
    1x84mm Carl Gustav
    4x M18A1 CDF
    4xM72A6

Not a bad tool kit to choose from really.

That would be alright in the mounted role, I would hate to carry it full time on foot though.
DFSW on foot is a mugs game in my opinion :P , I would much rather be out on in recon patrol .

    Tell me about it.
    GPMG, 10kg odd
    four spare barrels, 11kg odd
    tripod, 13kg odd
five thousand rounds, 14kg per 200rd belt

And all shared out between four guys.
    Fook that for a joke.

I dunno, i've never called it anything other than a minimi or sometimes an LSW.

Rounds dont weigh quite that much though... but still, rover's come in handy

I think they are made under licence at Lithgow, we call them F89s, the steyrs are F88s, the 7.62 sniper rifles are SR98s and the .50cal sniper rifle is the AW50F.
