Default Question about Rank Insignia on helmets

I was wondering about the placing or regulations concerning Rank Slides on helmets, in either the British or US Army.

I have seen pictures where some US soldiers are wearing Helmet ranks, although I haven't seen any Brits with helmet ranks, although the actual Helmet Rank Patches do exist.

I was also wondering, if helmet ranks do apply to us Brits, where exactly on the helmet should the rank patch be sewn?

i don't know anything about the rules and such, but to me wearing a rank patch on your helmeth seems like painting a bulls eye on it for the first and best sniper that spots you.

I don't know exact regs, but from what I've seen most soldiers (US Army) and officers of all branches have the rank patch in almost dead center of the front of the helmet. As for enlisted personnel of other branches, I am not too sure. Myself, I am in the USAF and have never seen rank on our helmets, probably since we wear rather large patches on our sleeves (and not many of us necessitate the use of a helmet anyway). I am not sure about the USMC, however.

An Army friend of mine was getting ready for field exercises and quickly applied her rank and helmet cover. The rank was sewn onto the cover, then placed over the helmet...so the regs might state the rank placement in regards to the cover before it's put on the helmet, thereby ensuring that when it's on, the rank will be in the proper location.

    US Army from ar670-1

    g. Helmet liner and helmet camouflage cover. Only the insignia prescribed below is authorized for wear on the helmet liner or helmet camouflage cover, as indicated. Personnel will not alter the color of the helmet except for safety or training requirements.
    (1) All personnel, except chaplains, wear their subdued grade insignia centered on the front of the camouflage cover,
approximately 21⁄2 inches up from the bottom rim. Subdued pin-on or embroidered sew-on grade insignia is authorized
for wear on the camouflage cover. Commanders may not require enlisted soldiers to attach embroidered grade insignia,
unless it is issued and attached without cost to the soldier (see fig 28–13). Chaplains wear their subdued branch
insignia, in lieu of grade insignia. Wear of nametapes or the use of other means to apply names to helmet bands is
determined by the commander and is provided to soldiers at no cost.

In the UK Army rank should not be shown on helments, or anywhere other than on the rank tab(s) provided on the shirt/jacket. Incedentally on ops only the issued CS95 sldes should be used (ie not regimental/corps slides), however no-one seems to follow that rule,

Absolutly correct, excessive indication of rank, be it additional badges or signature kit, serves no purpose other that to help the enemy.
