I am going to be purchaising a rifle for target shooting, I would like to know what the best type of m16 style rifle and best type of bolt action rifle in everyone's opinion would be a good purchase? I am probably going to go with the M-16 style rifle at first so can someone give me an opinion as to which brand of that type of semi-auto M16 style rilfe I, as a civilan, would be able to purchase? thanks for you help
just go out and try a few different ones, see which one fits you the best, which you enjoy shooting. If all you want to do is target shoot, I dont see why you'd want to bother spending too much money on it, trying to get the later model-style rifles (A3/A4). just would seem to be a waste in my eye, if you just want to plink away at cans in the backyard.
AR style rifles are very accurate and very good on the range.
If you are only want to own one more rifle, I'd say a high quality .22lr or .17 hornady bolt action is an awesome cheap trainer. You can get good quality for little money, and you can shoot many many rounds for little money.
Olympic Arms has a .223 "plinker" which is a M16A2 style rifle. It's like $500-600 depening on where you go, but it's a very decent gun for the range. I shot one a couple of months ago, now I plan on getting one myself.
By your post, I am guessing that you don't have alot of experience shooting weapons.
If that is the case; I suggest that you buy yourself a smaller caliber bolt action or single shot rifle. With a semi you could develope some "Not so good" habits. First learn to make every shot count. After you develope this mind set, you'll be ready to move onto other weapons.
If you are unsure of my reasoning, PM me. I'll be glad to explain in more detail.
If you are an experienced shooter, disregard the above.
Remington 700s are a good platform to start with. For semis I like the Knight's Armament SR-25 (You gotta pay, to play with this one.)
