colt and lmt make the best. i dont know if lmt sells to the public but i think they do sell the lowers under a different name.

my advice is go with a colt. from there the possibilities are endless and its always good to start with the best.

for target shooting make sure you get the a3/a4 style reciever without the carry handle for more choices when it comes to optics.

go down to ar15.com they are very knowledgable people and will help you a lot with any questions you have, just dont ask what ak al pacino used in heat. some poor bastard made that mistake.

just go out and try a few different ones, see which one fits you the best, which you enjoy shooting. If all you want to do is target shoot, I dont see why you'd want to bother spending too much money on it, trying to get the later model-style rifles (A3/A4). just would seem to be a waste in my eye, if you just want to plink away at cans in the backyard.

No reason to spend the $$ on a Colt, when Bushmaster or RRA are just as good (I have one of each, two of the latter).

If you're looking for a bolt gun, you can't error if you go with a Remington 700 (any 700).

What are you looking to do with said firearm?

AR style rifles are very accurate and very good on the range.

If you are only want to own one more rifle, I'd say a high quality .22lr or .17 hornady bolt action is an awesome cheap trainer. You can get good quality for little money, and you can shoot many many rounds for little money.

Ruger mini-14, cheap and very reliable.

Olympic Arms has a .223 "plinker" which is a M16A2 style rifle. It's like $500-600 depening on where you go, but it's a very decent gun for the range. I shot one a couple of months ago, now I plan on getting one myself.

By your post, I am guessing that you don't have alot of experience shooting weapons.
If that is the case; I suggest that you buy yourself a smaller caliber bolt action or single shot rifle. With a semi you could develope some "Not so good" habits. First learn to make every shot count. After you develope this mind set, you'll be ready to move onto other weapons.
If you are unsure of my reasoning, PM me. I'll be glad to explain in more detail.
If you are an experienced shooter, disregard the above.
Remington 700s are a good platform to start with. For semis I like the Knight's Armament SR-25 (You gotta pay, to play with this one.)

Get a semi-auto 22. 22 rounds are cheaper than dirt.. I went to a CETME which was stupid of me, i should've got a 22 as my first gun.

i have to agree with Devgru77, .22 semi auto is a quite entertaining rifle, and the ammo is bloody cheap.
