the maroon beret SHOULD be EARNED after completing P Coy. but some of the powers that be think it would make others feel left out.
every swinging hat in the bde gets one...not right.

if they do the jumps course and dont go to an airborne unit they are supposed to wear the lightbulb but no one does....there are a lot of walts around.

yes you can do the jumps course and never go near P Coy but as for that...read the earned bit from above.....its all about ethos etc.....but dont get me started.

oh, and the 7 Regt RHA thing....dont get me started on that either! biggest bunch of hats around......they are pretty close to losing the Para bit from their name as they only just reach the % part of para trained personnel in their unit!! the engineers are the same....they still wear the 5 Air Bde flash under their collar on their smocks!! thing is most of them arent old enough to have served in 5 airborne....as Bluff said they (think ) they are the most airborne (7 hat that is)....thing is, if you are and you know you are, you dont have to say it or show it. you let your professionalism in your job show that for you.

As far back as WW2 all members of Airborne Forces whether parachute-trained or not wore the maroon beret. So, right or wrong, there is some precedent for it.

The 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment (1 R IRISH) Battle Group has mounted the largest air assault operation in the history of the regiment since 1945, when soldiers from the regiment landed on the east bank of the Rhine during World War Two.

Helicopters of the British Royal Air Force land in Freetown 08 may 2000, at their arrival today. Britain launched an evacuation plan today for British and EU nationals and Commonwealth citizens in Sierra Leone, where a flap-up in rebel violence has raised fears of a return to civil war.
