Any of you remember Yakov Meridor and his perpetual enrgy machine from 1981?
What's your point? We aren't going to export it.
Israel uses little gas since it's a small country and we don't use gas for heating, so this amount will last according to estimates for about two decades. Strategically it is very important and it is great for the economy that the money is spent inside and not to pay for some external provider like Egypt.
If oil goes up again it can become a pretty big deal as there are converter kits for cars that make them run on natural gas making it 1/2 the cost of running a vehicle. Utah is big into this technology as we have very large natural gas fields and many have put converter kits on. The kits allow a car to run on either gasoline or natural gas.
More than 50% of area off Israeli coast to be plumbed for gas, oil
Fifty-four percent of Israeli waters off the coast will soon be divided up among several companies to search for natural gas and crude oil.
The Crude Oil Council within the National Infrastructures Ministry recommended issuing an additional 20 licenses on Thursday, the ministry announced on Sunday.
Following the success of the Tamar 1 find of a large quantity of natural gas off the coast of Haifa, the council recommended further exploration in the hopes of finding more fossil fuels.
After several years in which less than 10% of Israel's waters were being explored, the ministry has been steadily increasing licenses for exploratory expeditions.
Council head Dr. Ya'acov Mimran said at the opening of the meeting that there was a 40% chance of a 20 billion-cu.m. find at the Dalit drilling site in the Michal licensing area.
The council also recommended issuing a license to Negev Oil and Shale to produce shale oil in the Rotem area in the South.
All licenses must be approved by the minister and the relevant legal authorities within the ministry.

Tshuva mulls exporting natural gas
Owner of group that controls Delek and Tamar-1 drill sites, where large quantities of natural gas were recently discovered, says 'examining possibility of exporting natural gas to other countries'. Delek Energy CEO says plans to be able to meet all of Israel's gas needs by 2012

Yitzhak Tshuva, owner of Delek Group that controls the Dalit natural gas drilling site recently discovered off the coast of Hadera, said Thursday, "We are examining the possibility of exporting natural gas to other countries, and supplying gas to every demanding body in Israel."
The site, and its commercial potential, was discovered in March, just two months after another drilling site, Tamar-1 was discovered off the coast of Haifa, with monumental economic potential.
However, sources close to Tshuva said that for the time being, Delek was not holding specific talks with any country regarding the sale of natural gas.
Countries that are likely to make use of Israeli gas include Georgia, that is currently dependant on a Russian gas supply despite the hostile relations between the two nations, Cyprus that has a similar problem since it is dependant on gas from Turkey, and Italy and Greece.
"The discovery of Israeli gas is a national holiday for all citizens of the State of Israel. After two of our drillings in the same area were successful and turned out to be commercial discoveries, it is probable, and we are hopeful, that the natural gas potential in areas that we have rights over, off the shores of Israel and Cyprus, seems to be monumental.
"The natural gas discoveries that already exist are enough for all the State of Israel's needs for many years, and Israel will be an important player in anything related to the supply of natural gas," Tshuva said.
The Delek owner continued to say, "There is great potential in the State of Israel for homemade energy and we will continue to search for more gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean Basin…We will prepare immediately to be able to supply natural gas to every body and consumer in every spot in Israel as soon as possible, and everyone will be able to benefit from green, clean and cheaper energy."
Delek Energy CEO Gideon Tadmor added, "We plan to work vigorously to develop the gas sites in a way that will allow us fully supply all of Israel's gas needs starting from the year 2012

Up to $6 bil. in natural gas found
Prospective resources off Israel's coast could be up to 6 trillion cubic feet.

The Canadian Bontan Oil and Gas Company, which has been exploring for natural gas off the coast of Israel, announced Tuesday that it had found prospective resources of up to 6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in Mira and Sarah Prospects off the country's coast.
As defined on the company's Web site, prospective resources are “those quantities of petroleum estimated, as of a given date, to be potentially recoverable from undiscovered accumulations by application of future development projects. “
The two finds could be worth upwards of US $6 billion.
The Canadian company “will have an indirect 71.625% interest in these prospects via its 75% equity interest in the Israel Petroleum Company which has acquired a 95.5% interest in the drilling licenses as well as an adjoining exploration permit from the current operator subject to approval by the Government of Israel,” a press release on its Website announced.
The evaluation report, conducted by Chapman Petroleum Engineering stated, “Based on our analysis, after consideration of risk, we have concluded that the potential of these prospects is of sufficient merit to justify the work program being proposed, and we therefore recommend and support the Company’s participation.”
The top-find estimates are a best-case scenario, with “the best estimate [for the Mira Prospect] of gross prospective sales gas resources at 4.24 TCF and for the Sarah Prospect, the best estimate of gross prospective sales gas resources is 1.47 TCF. The following table provides best, low and high estimates of gross prospective sales gas resources for each prospect.
