    [ID] Weird sniper rifle attachment

Found this on the internets and as always when I find strange things there I feel like I should share it with my favourite forum.

What is this thing called and where do they use it?

How could you crawl around with that thing. You'd have a real steady aim but at the cost of giving your position away lol.

Basically back after Aliens came out lots of people saw the smart guns and thought it was a really cool idea. They had a bit of a play using the same steady cam mounts James Cameron had used for the Smart guns and came to the obvious conclusion that it might look cool but it was very, very silly in real life, you want to do certain things like lie flat without doing yourself an injury or get through doors. This seems to be from that silly experimental phase. And dont ask me where i saw that, it was a passing comment by an ex-special forces guy in a documentary talking about crossovers from real life to fiction during the late 90's.

On the other hand i've just tried to find some actual proof to back up my dodgy memory and all I can find by google is a lot of airsoft and Aliens fan pages.

"Smart Guns", they called them; those have got to be the best weapon props I had ever seen in a sci-fi movie.

I can see the dude doing something similar by mounting an MG3 on the tip of that rig instead - otherwise... pointless.
