I long time ago said what I don't like in design of these things.In before damian analyzing the glaring mistakes of design in those tanks...
On the other hand I found something interesting, it seems that newest ZTZ-99A2 don't have front turret modular armor, but more classic only welded cavity type for armor inserts. This tank definetly in some aspects broke typical Chinese design pattern.

What version of ZTZ-96 You are compared to what version of T-72 tank?
ZTZ-96 is something between early T-72's and late T-72's like T-72B, while T-72B is on armor level and firepower level of ZTZ-99.
ZTZ-96 and ZTZ-99 have probably better engine and better FCS than currently widespread versions of T-72 tanks.
However overall armor protection of Russian tanks is better. For example turret. Both T-72 and Chinese tanks have thick front armor and very thin side-rear armor of turret. This is due weight restrictions. Russians solved problem by turret geometry, thanks to specific shape of Russian tanks turrets weak side-rear armor is covered over safe manouvering angles (+/- 30 degrees from turret center line at turret frontal arc) by frontal armor, while more rectangural Chinese tanks turrets are more vurnabale to hits at these angles because are less covered by front turret armor.
Besides this Russian tanks use dynamic protection also on side hull skirts, while Chinese tanks use only thin sheet metal skirts that offers actually little to no protection for side hull armor.
This is also very important when we consider safe manouvering angles. Western designs for example, use heavy ballistic skirts there that are also made from multilayer laminate armor or dynamic protection instead of heavy ballistic skirts.
That depends on which version of T-72 you are talking abt..
Their are various variation in T-72 models..
