And her propulsion engines seem to be sitting a bit to close to the water. Perhaps the production model will raise them a couple of feet.

Youare correct P-12. I bet those engines suck up their fair share of H2o.. That could lead to a very short life in the open sea.

The intakes are facing upwards. The only reason the fans look so low is because the skirt is deflated as the lift fans are not running. Here's a USN LCAC, very similar height etc

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

For what it's worth I dont think it's all that much smaller than the US LCAC

I don't think it's "very small" when compare with US LCAC

Its said that the max. transport weight is about 70 tons.

But this seems to be a question of the propulsion. Maybe in later upgrades, this weight will increase - the space is there, after all.

Ok let's say a little smaller..The photos below are more representive of an USN LCAC..By the way the USN has ninety-one fully operational LCACs..along with 10 LHD/LHAs and 11 LPDs and 11 LSDs to operate those LCACs from. Just in case you did not know...

    USN LCAC in operation.

The Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) is a high-speed, over-the-beach fully amphibious landing craft, capable of carrying a 60-75 ton payload. It is used to transport the weapons systems, equipment, cargo and personnel of the assault elements of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force from ship to shore and across the beach. LCAC can carry heavy payloads, such as an M-1 tank, at high speeds. The LCAC payload capability and speed combine to significantly increase the ability of the Marine Ground Element to reach the shore. Air cushion technology allows this vehicle to reach more than 70 percent of the world's coastline, while only about 15 percent of that coastline is accessible by conventional landing craft. Info from Sinodefense on the Chinese Navy LCAC.

    http://www.sinodefence.com/navy/amphibious/lcac.asp

The PLA Navy has recently introduced a new air cushion landing craft design, which is clearly intended for the recently-commissioned Type 071 landing platform dock (LPD). The craft is very similar to the U.S. Navy LCAC in its roles, but with a smaller size. An LCAC is capable of carrying 60~75 tonnes of cargo, armament, or personnel from the amphibious warfare ship in the offshore water to shore at high-speed. Equivalently the Chinese version of the LCAC is also expected to carry an armoured fighting vehicle and troops.

The Chinese LCAC also uses a similar arrangement to the U.S.N. LCAC, but with the driving/command module located on the port side instead of the starboard side of the vessel. The vessel has both bow and stern ramps for fast loading/unloading of troops and vehicles. Two shrouded reversible-pitch propellers are located at the stern of the vessel. The vessel appears to have four gas turbines. It is not known whether the they are indigenous designs or based on the Russian or Ukrainian technology.

Each Type 071 LPD could probably fit 2~3 of the Chinese LCAC in its floodable bay. The use of LCAC enables the LPD to launch amphibious assaults from points over the horizon, thereby decreasing risk to ships and personnel by enemy anti-ship weaponry and generating greater uncertainty in the enemy’s coast defence planning. LCAC could operate in waters regardless of depth, underwater obstacles, shallows or adverse tides. It can even proceed inland on its air cushion, regardless of terrain such as mud flats, sand dunes, ditches, riverbanks, or slippery and icy shorelines.

So, we can assume that the Varyag will have both Su-33/J-15 Heavy Fighters and possibly also Naval J-10B's for its carrier wing.
