Here is a picture of the 'original' mock-up with integrated cbrn.

Unfortunately the R&D budget got slashed, the Afghanistan operation is taking a lot of money.

    Default yea

When is somone going to make a helmate that can stop a 30 grain projectile at 2100 fps.

That way the 5.7 round is toast.

I like this iteration of the Galea better, the 'original' just is too bulky for my taste. Even if offers CRBN protection. We still have gasmasks though.

    Translation:

TNO has developed a new combihelmet for the Defense Materials Organisation(DMO). The helmet's design is based on operational experience from recent deployements such as the current one in Afghanistan. When/if all the tests are completed succesfully, the Galea(Roman word for helmet) will be handed out to the first batch of soldiers by 2011.

The new helmet stems from the Verbeterd Operationeel SoldatenSysteem (VOSS in Dutch or Improved Operational Soldiers'System, IOSS in English) and offers some tremendous advantages. The Galea weighs less, has a better fit and offers better protection. The helmet consists of multiple detacheable parts, and the intention is that the dressed down variant(variant zero on the schematic) (weird, cuz this is just the glasses and the earbud, so no helmet at all) has a friedly, approacheable appearance. This benefits contact with the local population when out on patrol.

Galea weighs 1100 grams, which is almost half the weight of the current helmet, which has been in use since the 90's

The helmet fitting form has been improved proffesionally, resulting in a secure fit on the head. New as well are the ergonomic mounts for nightvision goggles and the helmets may possibly be equipped with a airconditioning system, situated between the helmet and the head(my guess is that we'll probably see a cap, to be worn on the head and underneath the helmet, fitted with mini coolant tubes, like the shirt TNO developed/is developing for helo and fighter pilots)
It is also fitted with seperate neck, jaw and ear pieces, which cancel out noise at high ambient sound levels. TNO is currently researching how it can improve the protection of neck, throat and face even more. The first test run of Galea helmets will be evaluated in the field later this year. The design itself has received several awards at a innovation summit in Prague.

More wearer comfort, more flexibility and better protection, are core components of Project VOSS. In addition to the helmet, a smart vest and a communications and combat information module are also being developed under the project(the TNO micro fuel cell is probably part of this as well). Goal is to improve and harmonize the battlefield capabilities of the soldier as much as possible. His gear no longer is a collection of individual components, but a lightweight, wearable system in which the components needed are integrated as much as possible.

5500 frontline troops have been selected for (initial?) participation in VOSS. The programme is a evolution of the Soldier Modernisation Programme(SMP), which started in 1998.

I translated it myself, so the grammar might be a bit wonky, but at least it's better than Babelfish.

    Re CBRN

The modularity of the design will alow integration of a CBRN chin-piece at a later date however.

Oakley makes a set of air conditioning ballistic goggles called the SI Ballistic Fan Goggles

Hopefully this existing technology could lend an idea or two to the project.

I find the FWC technology pretty interesting all around, but thats pretty cool with the translation system/concept integrated within the helmet...

I first started seeing that concept back in 2000-2001. So 8-9 years ago.

That concept was not posted 8-9 years ago...the earlier FWC concept was, which, for a time, showed the wrist-mounted weapons platform. Even though it is about 4-5 years old, it still exists due to just looking at the 2030 Initiative Concept (even though it is not necesarily what it will even be close to looking like in that timeframe). I just find the technology incorporated/envisioned with the helmet quite neat.
