So, only officers, police and commando carry pistols? Or is it allowed to carry a pistol maybe hidden for self protection in the IDF? Oh thanks Climber since you wrote i searched for that an I found pictures of IDF soldiers carrying the pistol in a hidden in-trouser holster on the lower back...

Hmm, interesting question. I only can speak of myself and the people i know. The most fall in love by it with their hobby. I am also an reenactor 1150 -1300 Medival ages. As a child i always loved movies with knights, and where i am living there are dozens of castles. So i met a few people that dressed up like knights, soldiers and maidens in that time and i joined them. with that the learning about that period became more and more.. hundreds (no joke) of books about building castles, living in that time and so on... buying my own tent, building my sword, shield and other eqipment historical correct... with reenacting a specific country or unit its the same. I play Airsoft and a lot of my friend try to copy SWAT, US Special Forces, US Marines etc.. I thougt about what my favorit would be... then it was possible to get for less money an OMON outfit and an ODA outfit. I always was an friend of israel and so i thought it would be good to reenact them. But also to honor them by wearing their colors. You know that we germans got our history...sad sad thing... i am also active in many different forums about israel, but i don't want to show up here my political thinking. An real reenactor is an hunter and colector... he would always try to get everything original and to wear it like the people have done or still do... so i don't collect stamps...but swords, uniforms and guns

And I probably chased his dad.
We were hard-core Nahalaim, we just soaked them and rolled over them with John Deeres 3 or 4 times, and then sat on them on the bus. And they weren't no pussy colored lime green either.
Every combat unit has armed medics (chovshim) who are regularly trained infantry too. The closest special unit would be the Heyl Avir's Unit 669, Israel's SAR unit; no special beret though.
