If you want a bomb-proof and tested pack. both in the military and the civilian world, then the Vulcan is your choice. If you want a Berghaus pack with MOLLE grids and a wider bottom opening for your sleeping bag, then it's the Crusader. Problem is that you'll have to choose one out of the four sizes available, since the back is non-adjustable.

The Karrimor OTOH has adjustable back frame and several other features. Read a very good and detailed review about the 60-100 version.

Thanks, that's a very extensive review of the Karrimor. I'm almost convinced . Another question though. The Vulcan has quite narrow and relatively unpadded shoulderstraps which feel very firm. They didn't bother me at all and actually felt quite comfortable. This Karrimor seems to have loads of padding. Doesn't that tend to get soaked? I do prefer an adjustable backpack over a fix harnass though.

Anyone here that owns one of these?

I recently bought the Berghaus Crusader and used it on exercises , excellent pack!

It is slightly larger than the Vulcan and has some more features which makes it more practical. It has a floating top lid with more separate zippered compartments which makes it more adaptable to various loads and it makes storing those little items easier. The bottom compartment is larger to and it has provisions for easy integration with hydratation bladders. It also has some MOLLE webbing but I don't use it.

I've compared the Crusader to the Vulcan, plenty of colleagues use it, and I would chose the Crusader any day of the week, it simply has more practical features. I can't compare to the Karrimor however since I never used it and have never seen anyone use it in the Belgian army (If memory serves me right you're in the Belgian army).

Thanks Sato, yes I'm in NCO-school.

The reason I'm fussing over a pack is because I want to use it in civilian life (mountain hikes during the summer) as well as on the job (I was told free choice of packs is allowed in Arlon and I suppose they don't fuss over that in the units). It's a big investment so I should pick carefully. I bought a second hand Vulcan but it's a bit too large for me so if any Belgians here want a good deal on a Vulcan, give me a holler.

Another thing I learned is that you shouldn't look at what most other guys buy. It's mostly sound gear but most of them bought it because they saw older guys use it so it's not always the best most recent thing out there.

    French Army Issued Assault Pack?

Anyone know where I can get one, or have any information on them?

A buddy of mine traded A-bags with a French San-Cyr Cadet while on exchange. He came back with a green assault pack with molle webbing, a space for a camelback, a velcro flap/pouch inside the pack, two antenna ports w/ velcro antenna bindings, a big rectangular velcro (fuzzy side) patch on the face of the pack for nametapes and it had securing/synching straps all over the place. Peculiar aspects of this thing were "forest, almost lime" green fast ex clips and a velcro peice on the bottom of the pack rimmed with 550 cord loops. The back of the pack featured mesh padding and metal clips where a waist strap must have been.

This french mystery pack blows my issued one out of the water in regard to comfort and capacity and I would very much appreciate any help ascertaining one.

Well my daypack ripped open last week. I was looking at the Berghaus Munro or the Berghaus Centurio. Any other suggestions? Should be olive/green or Belgian Jigsaw.

Anybody have any good recommendations for a large holdall luggage bag for travelling through airports?

Standard issue Brit military bag straps snapped on me last year. My last purchase was a civi sports bag which now the cheap inner liner for one of the side pockets has now split.

    Any recommendations welcome!

Anyone have experience with Red Rock outdoor gear?

They seem to clone a lot of Camelbak products. So far I've seen HAWG, MULE, Ambush, and Thermobak clones.

I like the look of the Diplomatic bag, shame I can't seem to find it in the UK.

They look like cheap Chinese knockoffs of Maxpedition gear. YGWYPF.

I use a North Face Base Camp Duffel, in black.

    http://uk.thenorthface.com/tnf-uk-en...ffel-m-14.html

Pretty sure I've got this 70L one, but they do a 100L, as well as a smaller one. Check the link. Also comes in a wide variety of colours.

It's pretty robust, far more so than a Pussers' black grip and won't soak up every single drop of rain, Lucozade, lager/cider or any other liquid you're likely to spill on it in transit, like a Pussers' grip will.

Yea, that's what I'm thinking about them. I might try the scout pack I linked to just for airsoft and stuff but I would never use it for any real outdoor activities.
