A plaque honoring the life and service of BM1 Edgar Culbertson is adorned with iris flowers during a memorial service on the 42nd anniversary of his death during a rescue attempt on this same pier. There are also three iris flowers, one for each of the three brothers lost along with BM1 Culbertson, who was posthumously awarded the Coast Guard Medal for his heroism.

Coast Guard members in Duluth rise colors during a service to honor the 42nd Anniversary of a rescue that took the life of BM1 Edgar Culbertson from Lifeboat Station Duluth. Coast Guard Fireman, Ronald Prei – far right was part of the rescue party that set out to search for three lost brothers on this same pier on April 30, 1967. BM1 Culbertson and all three boys perished in Lake Superior during the same storm that took thirteen lives to Tornadoes in southern Minnesota, known as Black Sunday.
