Gday
well im pretty new to the whole mountain biking thing, and seeing i couldnt find a bike thread (only could find moto threads) i though id start one.
-if theres allready one of these threads then my bad, could the mods close this then, cheers
Well i orginally brought my bike just to get fitter and ride to and from work, but recentley ive started doing fire trails, little downhill tracks on the weekend and im loving it. Ive also managed to finally use the back of my place to make a mini downhill track (probably the first time id been glad to have a real steep acre of bush)
-So do any of you guys ride? where? what bike? etc etc
also ill chuck in a couple of pics from the weekend, go easy though fellas. this is the first kind of this riding ive done apart from a bit of BMX jumping back in school days
cheers

I used to do BMX when I was a kid, but I haven't in years.
While at uni worked in a bike shop. Have got the giant team hardtail frame from a number of years ago with all custom bits. Compared to the new bikes its still ok, but seriously, what you can get for $2k now is amazing.
yeah my bad, i normally am pretty good with the safety stuff and usually dont go anywhere without my helmet/ lights when riding at night time etc etc, those photos were taken after a day of building the track, it was the first run just to see if any tweaks needed to be made. I am also seriously considering a full face helmet cause the track is only going to get faster.
sweet, ive been riding that bike which is my first mountian bike for bout 6mths now and reckon if i keep up these kind of rides i might invest in a new 'play' bike in a year or so (gotta save). Ive been to a couple of shops to get ideas and such and as far as i can work out a dual susp 'All mountain' bike would be ideal. As i like all the downhill stuff as well as long fire trail rides and a bit of the up hill. Any ideas??While at uni worked in a bike shop. Mate of mine is a A grade downhill/cross country guy and managed to crack his face while wearing a helmet while just stuffing abuot. Always wear a helmet.
IMO Giant are the best value for money. I was seriously looking at one of the cheaper full suspensions, but the one i was looking at doesn't appear to be in the latest catalogue. It was retailing for about $2500.
The lower end trance x3 has decent travel compared to the say halo, but is $1k more. The halo at $2k seems ok, but is more entry level than the trance, yet with similar running gear. The trance does appear to have slightly better quality shocks.
It seems snobby, but i prefer the better bikes with replaceable chain rings etc. Having said that they are all pretty good value for money than say compared to the late 90's. Even the base running gear now is far superior than the top end stuff then.
At the end of the day look at bikes, ride them, pick the one that you like.
I used to ride a Specialized, then a Scott and I am now riding a Lapierre. Expensive but good stuff![]()
I'd stay away from the freeride stuff, I think it probably has too much travel for what you want to do. Go full suspension, just make sure you get an air shock or hydraulic-based rear shock with a lockout, that way you can use it as a hardtail when you need to.
Plan carefully; you can either save up and drop a lot of cash on a prebuilt brand name, or you can save up and spend alot by buying a frame and building it up with custom parts. Either way, if it's something you think you'll be doing alot of, spend good money the first time around, if you can. A lot of people I know would usually get a cheaper hardtail to start out on, or even an entry level full suspension, and end up either getting another bike, or replacing just about every part on their entry-level bike with something better.
Oh, and if you do go with a full-suspension bike, try to stay away from the ones with spring-loaded rear shocks. Some of them will come with several different springs so you can adjust the dampening and rebound, but it's nowhere near as adjustable as a pneumatic shock. I have a personal love for Giants and Specialized myself, and several folks I know in Colorado swear by Kona's mtbs. Enjoy cycling![]()

I got a full suspension Vermont Koyukon, havent done much of riding downhill as there are not that many hills around here.
But for use on the roads it is quite good aswell.

Vince S will be all over this.
I've got a Rockrider 9.1 and suits me fine for the odd 30 km on the weekend, in Sintra. Mostly uphill and then down this track:

Geez, it's not even full blown summer here yet,(spring and summer are road cycling season) and i'm already missing MTB'ing. Although it's none of that crazy stuff that you 'mericans and canucks do. There's a badass track not so far from where i live, in the Schoorl/Bergen coastal forest. It's around 15 k long. Beautifull scenery in the summer.
