Russia: Ingushetia interior ministry in grenade attack

Attackers have fired grenades at the interior ministry in Russia's restive republic of Ingushetia.
At least one policeman was killed and others were injured in the attack on the building, which also houses the local police headquarters.
Several assailants fired around five grenades into the building before fleeing in a car after Monday's attack in the regional capital Nazran.
The North Caucasus has seen a recent upsurge in violence.
Simmering conflicts blight the mainly Muslim regions of Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan.
Hundreds of people - rebels, security force personnel, ordinary civilians and human rights activists - have been killed in recent months.
In Ingushetia, the president's motorcade was bombed last June, leaving him severely injured. And a suicide bomb attack there in August killed more than 20 people.
Almost daily there are reports of deaths, kidnappings and clashes with rebels in the region.
In April, Russia declared it had successfully completed its military campaign in Chechnya - where it fought two wars against Muslim separatist rebels.
But lower-level violence there has continued in Chechnya, and in neighbouring Ingushetia and Dagestan it has been growing more serious.

Security stepped up again in Ingushetia following death of two FSB officers in Nazran
Security is being stepped up for government security forces and police in Russia’s Ingushetia after violence that left two Federal Security Service officers dead last week, news agencies are reporting, referring to the Interior Ministry of Ingushetia.
The officers were killed in separate attacks by gunmen on January 30 in Nazran, the main city in Ingushetia, news agency AP reminds.
The Interior Ministry branch in the southern Russia republic said a police officer and a bystander were wounded when one of the attacks erupted into a gunfight near Nazran’s train station. The ministry gave no details about the increased security measures, news agency adds.

Two rebels killed in Russian Dagestan

    Font size :

In recent months Dagestan has witnessed a surge in violence between separatist militants and pro-Kremlin forces.
At least two suspected militants have been killed in clashes between Russian police and gunmen in the restive region of Dagestan.

The suspects were killed during a shootout in the region's southern Kaitag district late on Sunday, local police said.

In recent months, Dagestan has witnessed a surge in violence between separatists and federal forces, prompting the Kremlin to extend its anti-terror operations in the North Caucasus.

In a recent speech on the rising strife in the region, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin warned militants of "a ruthless fight" and vowed to deal with the roots of militancy.

Separatist groups have been vying for greater leverage against Moscow's federal rule in their campaigns in the volatile republics of Ingushetia, Chechnya and Dagestan.

Violence in the North Caucasus is also linked to internal criminal disputes and power struggles.

Russian police kill al-Qaeda's 'sword of Islam'

A militant shot dead by police in the south Russian republic of Dagestan was one of the co-founders of al-Qaeda in the North Caucasus, a security service spokesman said on Wednesday. Egyptian national Mohamad Shaaban, 49, was killed during a shootout with police in the tiny republic's mountainous Botlikhsky District on Tuesday. A Dagestani militant and a police officer also died.
An FSB spokesman said Shaaban, who went by the name of Seif Islam (the sword of Islam), had seen action in Afghanistan in the 1990s, and "was also in Sudan, Somali, Libya and Georgia."
"In 1992, he arrived in Chechnya to take part in operations against federal forces," the spokesman said, adding that Shaaban had organized the North Caucasus branch of al-Qaeda with Saudi-born Islamic radical Ibn Al-Khattab.

    From RIA Novosti:

At least two killed, 20 injured in blasts in volatile Ingushetia

    12:5019/02/2010

A series of explosions in Ingushetia killed at least two people and injured another 23 on Friday, prosecutors in the volatile republic in Russia's south said.
"The latest reports say two people were killed and another 23 were injured as a result of four explosions," an official in the republic's prosecutor's office said on the telephone.
Prosecutors said the blasts went off in Ingushetia's largest city, Nazran, but an unidentified Interior Ministry official said six explosions rocked the city, including one in an abandoned house.
Earlier reports said Nazran's police chief was among the injured.
Attacks on police and authorities have been an almost daily occurrence in Ingushetia, one of Russia's poorest regions. The neighboring North Caucasus republics of Chechnya and Dagestan have also been plagued by violence blamed on Islamic militants and criminal groups.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev highlighted security and economic problems in the mainly Muslim North Caucasus late last year and ordered measures to fight militant violence and clan rivalries, and curb pervasive corruption.
Medvedev also appointed a Siberian governor and successful businessman his envoy to the North Caucasus. Alexander Khloponin is widely expected to act as a crisis manager to tackle economic woes in the region.
