Thumbs up Quotes of USA General George Smith Patton, Jr.

Reading some posts in the political forum, reminded me of a couple of quotes of General George S. Patton, Jr. of World War II fame. General Patton was outspoken, a true soldier, a true warrior and a killer of the enemy. His views on war and warfare are highly regarded in the USA, by many, both military and civilians. Here are a few of his quotes, will add more later as time allows.

"Politicians are the lowest form of life on eart. Liberal Democrats are the lowest form of politicians."

"If we attempt to feed the world, we will starve and perhaps destroy America."

"Of course, our men are willing to die, but that is not enough. We must be eager to kill, to inflict on the enemy, the hated enemy, all possible wounds, death and destruction. If we die killing, well and good. But, if we fight hard enough, viciously enough, we will kill again. We will live to return to our families as conquering heroes."

"It took me a long time to reallize just how much a student of medieval history could gain from observing the Arab."

"A great politician is not of necessity a great military leader."

"War is not a contest with gloves. It is resorted to only when laws, which are rules, have failed."

"Civilization has affected us. We abhor personal encounter. Many a man will risk his life, with an easy mind, in a burning house, who would recoil from having his nose punched. We have been taught restraint from our emotions, to look upon anger as low, until many of us have never experienced the God sent ecstasy of unbridled wrath. We have never felt our eyes screw up, our temples throb, and have never had the red mist gather in our sight. But, we expect that a man shall, in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, to divest himself of all restraint, of all caution, and hurl himself upon the enemy, a frenzied beast, lusting to probe his enemy's guts with three feet of steel or to shatter his brain with a bullet. Gentlemen, it cannot be done with mental practice. Therefore you must school yourselves in savagery. You must imagine how it will feel when your sword hilt crashes into the breastbone of your enemy."

"War is the culmination of convergent commercial and political interests. Wars are fought by soldiers, but they are produced by businessmen and politicians."

"We will have no real Army until we have universal service."

"Men who are apt to die in battle are entitled to what pleasure they can get."

"It is hell to be old, passe, and know it."

"I love and admire good soldiers and brave men. I hate and despise slackers and cowards."

"I drove to the Rhine River and went across on the pontoon bridge. I stopped in the middle to take a piss and then picked up some dirt on the far side in emulation of William the Conquerer."

I dont remember the exact quote but it went something like this:

"I fancy that there is no one in my class who so hates to be last or who tries so hard to be first and who so utterly fails. And what makes it worse the failure is partly my fault. I still daudle a little in studying and I cant seem to get over it. Infact the sum total of me is that I am a character-less, lazy, stupid yet ambitious dreamer; who will degenerate into a third rate second lieutenant and never command any thing more than a platoon. Gosh but it is a shame that I am so constituted as to have only ambition and now [no] power to carry out a single thing I like to do. I will come off this rater cowardly line of discourse and try some more for a week when I will slacken as usual."
Letter, George S Patton to his father, November, 1904

I heard this was attributed to Patton, but I'm not 100% sure. I liked the quote so much that I used it as my sig on my military email account...until a superior "asked" that I remove it:

"Do not tell your men what to do, tell them what needs to be done and they will impress you with their ingenuity."

[FONT=Arial][SIZE=3]"Prisoner of War guard companies, or an equivalent organization, should be as far forward as possible in action to take over prisoners of war, because troops heated with battle are not safe custodians. How so? He seems to be saying that politicians, even "great" ones do not make good military leaders.

Just three days before D-Day, during a reception in the London Ritz Hotel, Patton shouted across a crowded reception in the direction of Eisenhower "I'll see you in Calais!", much to the consternation of all those around him. The ploy appears to have worked as reports of overnight troop movements north from Normandy were detected by Bletchley Park code decrypts.

"I do not fear failure. I only fear the "slowing up" of the engine inside of me which is pounding, saying, 'Keep going, someone must be on top, why not you?'"

"Always do everything you ask of those you command."

"Fixed fortifications are monuments to the stupidity of man."

"Goddamnit, I'm not running for the Shah of Persia. There are no practice games in life. It's eat or be eaten, kill or be killed. I want my bunch to be in there first, to be the 'fustest with the mostest'. They won't do it if I ask them nicely."

"I don't want to get any messages saying that, 'We are holding out position.' We're not holding anything! Let the Hun do that. We are advancing constantly and we're not interested in holding on to anything except the enemy. We're going to hold on to him by the nose and we're going to kick him in the ass; we're going to go through him like crap through a goose."

"The SS... a damn good-looking gang of disciplined sonofa*****es."

"I don't give a damn who the man is. He can be a ****** or a Jew, but if he has the stuff and does his duty, he can have anything I've got. By God! I love him."

"Remember that the enemy is just as frightened as you are, and probably more so. They are not supermen."

"We have the finest food, the finest equipment, the best spirit, and the best men in the world. Why, by God, I actually pity those poor sons-of-*****es we're going up against. By God, I do."

"Kill all the Germans you can, but do not kill them when they are up against a wall ready to surrender. Do your killing in the fields. We are to honor the Rules of Land Warfare at all times. If a German surrenders, he is to be treated with respect as a prisoner of war, the same treatment you would hope to get as a prisoner if you are unlucky enough to be captured by the enemy. Americans are not savages. Americans do not kick people in the face if they have been knocked down."

"Men are at war with each other because each man is at war with himself."

"The more I see of Arabs the less I think of them. By having studied them a good deal I have found out the trouble. They are the mixture of all the bad races on earth, and they get worse from west to east, because the eastern ones have had more crosses. "

It is attributed to him but in so many different forms that its authenticity is really in doubt.
