a special counterpiracy course, designated for civilian shipping security was held by the International Security Academy in israel. the course was held recently and hit local israeli as well as intl news - although israeli ships only encountered one single case of attempted pirate attack (successfuly averted) during the recent piracy crisis, israel has the longest experience of civilian ship security (both passive and active). summit brochure (PDF)

Smart marketing. But doesn't international law prohibit civilian use of weapons for security on ships?

As far as I know, it does not. As long as no criminal acts are committed, a private security can be used. The problem with most companies is liability/insurance issues I think.

It depends on the laws of the country to which the ship is registred in.

I just noticed Tavor. What's on the barrel - some kind of safety device for "dry" exercise?

How does someone get into the business of ship security? Sounds like a good job.
