It is with very deep regret that the Ministry of Defence confirms the names of five soldiers from The 2nd Battalion The Rifles, who were killed in Afghanistan on 10 July 2009.

Corporal Jonathan Horne, Rifleman William Aldridge, Rifleman James Backhouse, Rifleman Joseph Murphy and Rifleman Daniel Simpson were killed in action near Forward Operating Base Wishtan, Sangin.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert Thomson, Commanding Officer of the 2 RIFLES Battle Group:

"It has been a grim day here in Sangin but at the end of the day, as we prayed for our fellow Riflemen who have given their lives in the service of their country and for the good of the Afghan people, the Bugle Major sounded the advance and it would have been heard right across the valley as the sun slipped behind the ridge. We turned to our right, saluted the fallen and the wounded, picked up our rifles and returned to the ramparts.

"I sensed each Rifleman tragically killed in action today standing behind us as we returned to our posts and we all knew that each one of those Riflemen would have wanted us to 'crack on'. And that is what we shall do – there will be no turning; the work is too important. We are undeterred. But we will miss each fallen Riflemen sorely. They lived and fought alongside us and tonight our lives are much worse for them not being here. But we can celebrate what they were and what they achieved. We are so very proud of them.

"And yet in all of this, we know that our grief is nothing compared to that of their loved ones – parents, wives, children, girlfriends and families. And it is them we also hold tonight in our thoughts and prayers and ask that they may somehow find strength and courage to face the days ahead."... www.mod.uk Full Story

'Pink Panthers' sprint to victory in Helmand

While serving on the front line in Afghanistan, a group of female personnel has broken a Guinness World Record and all in the name of charity.

The team of women, which is made up of members from all three Services and one civilian, are currently serving as part of 19 Light Brigade in Lashkar Gah in Helmand province.

Last month, they took time out of their busy days to break the record of the number of kilometres run in 24 hours on a treadmill by a team of 12 women.

Struggling through intense heat within the UK Task Force Headquarters, they smashed the former record by 57km.

As 19 Light Brigade's emblem is a black panther, the team decided to reflect their femininity by christening themselves 'The Pink Panthers of Lashkar Gah' and proceeded to overtake the former record distance of 260.92km and create a new world record of 317.66km.

In addition, The Pink Panthers have raised more than £5,000 for two charities: the British Limbless Ex-Service Men's Association (BLESMA) and the Afghan Appeal, a charity that promotes awareness of the plight of Afghanistan's people and raises funds for specific projects such as schools and equipment.... www.mod.uk Full Story

This is the moment a a US Navy pilot gave a shocked resident a very close look at his F18.
The fighter/bomber streaked past an apartment block on the banks of the Detroit River at the weekend.
It was part of a tactical demonstration fly-past to open a speedboat race in the North American city.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but those don't look like Strike Eagles (no CFT, single seat), and according to wikipedia the 159th fighter wing only flies F-15C/Ds.

    Nice pics everyone.
