Don't want to appear as an "arrogant israeli" but the bad state of the syrian army seems pretty alarming, at least, from what we can see in those pics..

Are these pics enough to make a correct idea about the current syrian military?

Yeap the Syrian army is not in really good state
no fund ---> no modern equipment + conscription (which is seen as a little borring and dangerous by many young syrians .. the "life " in syrian winter outposts in Golan is awful).

but (always a but !) .they learn some lessons from 2006. and from 82'
They know that' they have no chance to challenge Tsahal in an conventional armored battle or in air dominance and they learnt after 73 that an israeli armored blitz could quickly threat Damascus.

For them the only chance to obtain at least a military "Pat" in a confrontation with Israel is to adapt units, strategy, and doctrin for an asymetric warfare as Hizb-i-allah did. So in the next years they will probably adapt their forces with more anti tank squads, and try to obtain more modern light and mobile surface to air launchers (Iranian MANPADS Mishag, chinese, NK and maybe Belarus upgrade).

But for that they need money, but less than they need to buy modern fighters and tanks !

IMHO the military situation with israel is frozen....till it's the same gvt in Damascus. The syrian ballistic capabilities could be seen as a low tech deterence.

Guys, as Mathieu said before this is a M48A1 that used to be Lebanese Army tank not israeli. An ex-lebanese M113 ACAV can be seen in the Damascus display and painted as 'israeli'
As for military pictures of the Syrian Army, don't dream guys, it's almost impossible to have something on that subject. Else than news photos and some lucky shots, Syrians do not have the culture of showing their military stuff.
The best collection of syrian military vehicles can be seen in Samer Kassis book '30 years of military vehicles in Lebanon'

syrian army is surly not in realy good shape but every year the situation is improving a bit more and more, new air defence systems were bougth etc.

how the situation with leadership and training is, is not clear but surly the learned a LOT from so many wars and conflicts with israel and surly sum up from that

That's normal, arabic and hebrew are both semitic languages and very close in fact. Like the word merkava in hebrew is markaba in arabic which means chariot.

Nop sir.. In Damascus, they are plenty of them around jisr al-rais, militaries building in mezzeh and the Presidence Palace, along Baas MIB (both are not really compliant with photo)..

The syrian army schools (Infantry artillery and armored) are at Homs and Aleppo.

I also heard about a possible purchase of MIG 31
both issues seem to have disturbed the israeli govenment at that time
does any one know if those deals were finalised?
