Default Brazil Buys 250 German Leopard Tanks

The Brazilian Army has purchased 250 German Leopard 1 A5 tanks to be deployed along 16,000km of the country's border, under the national defence strategy (NDS) programme.

The country will start receiving the tanks within three months, with first batch to be sent to Santa Maria in the southern-most state of Rio Grande do Sul.

The tanks, which cost $500m each, weigh 42t and carry a cannon capable of firing up to 4km.

The tanks are also capable of firing on the move by using an electronic, hydraulic gyroscopic gun stabiliser.

The tank is also fitted with two banks of smoke grenade dischargers on the turret to create a obscuring smoke screen.

The Leopard 1 A5 will be the backbone of the Brazilian Army and will give new dimension to Brazil's armoured combat vehicles, according to the Juiz Fora Federal University strategic studies centre.

The $15bn NDS programme is aimed at re-equiping the Brazilian armed forces and will also include the building of the country's first nuclear submarine with French aid, and the purchase of 24 fighter bombers for the air force.

    Very nice!

Question about the price, is that expensive, or around the average cost of a current gen tank? In other words, what's the going price for a LeClerc, or T-90, or Abrams, etc?

Edit: Just noticed it was Leopard 1. $500 million seems very expensive... What's the cost of a Leopard 2 then?

At the risk of sounding like an armchair general, what's the point of buying Leo 1s? They're already outdated, and have been for quite some time. Now granted, Brazil doesn't have any immediate enemies to worry about, so they can afford to lag behind. Their defense needs are limited. But wouldn't it be wiser to invest in Leopard 2s that could last for another 20-30 years into the future?

Isn't Leopard 1 an ancient tank? Why would Brazil spend so many billions on such a tank? 250 of them? I don't get it

I'd rather get 50 advanced tanks than buy 250 old ones, in couple of years someone will make a new generation tank and Leopard 1 will look even worse than it is right now.

its just a typo - one Leopard 1 A5 costs $500k according to other versions of the article. wiki says a Leopard 2 costs between $3m and $12m depending on the package

.. so i guess the Leopard 1 is a bargain

I think they are second hand 1A5 from Germany.. The 500 mill. must be for all of them.. 2 mill.$ each..

The German tanks are in really good shape and 1A5 is still a very capable tank with a really good gun and fire controls.

What external or internal threats does Brazil face that a Leo 1 couldnt handle just as well as a current line tank? Narco groups? cross border insurgencies? rioting population?

I 'm pretty sure the journalist got the price wrong.
500.000 $ per tank (125 million $ for the whole package) would be much closer to reality.
    And who's the seller?
I thought the whole stock of the German army had been sold.

    Leopard 1?
$500m as in 500 million "each"?
maybe they mean 500 million for 250 tanks - that would actually make more sense.

i saw some very old website that said that Brazil was interested in 240 Belgian Leopard 1A5 in the mid 90s... the numbers would fit.. so its probably Belgian ones i would guess... and afaik Germany doesn't have any Leo 1 tanks left
