If you buy Hawkeyes (and Greyhounds?), perhaps we could then pool the maintenance and stuff, so as to reduce ownership costs (and train pilots)
If we do go for the E2 it might also depend on how many we buy, if we buy 2 of 3 it will be off the shelf, if we buy more the mod might think it worth while to put in UK engines and or UK avionics in it.
oh no please don't even go down that road, even the MOD must have learned their lesson on that sort of escapade.
Engine wise we did it with the phantoms we bought from the US and that cost us millions in a pointless exercise, then we had Apache which we decided that instead of buying from the US directly we would build them in the UK,at many times the cost.
No IMHO they will be bought as is,makes sense financialy and also will integrate seamlessly with US aircraft.
Arfa,
Why would I have a link,it's my opinion and I can't see anything else on the horizon fitting the bill. Surely you must have your own opinion and not just rely on what your read/hear. What would your choice be?
Your joking right has this government done something with the mod yet that has installing you with any confidence what so ever ?
They didn’t learn the lesson about getting rid of aircraft carriers and the aircraft for them and now look at us.
If there is a way to screw this up they will find it and do it.
would you prefer the last lot to still be in power?
God no, But is it to much to ask for a government (any government) to get some of the choices right when it come to military.
The only thing they have done right so far is to switch the carriers to cat and traps.
personally i think the only thing they've really done wrong is scrap the current carriers and their Harrier wings... the rest was necessary. Harsh and painful, but still necessary.
Doesn't the UK version have features more suited to us (folding rotor blades for example), more powerful engines and a raft of other features?
A quote about the differences in the WAH-64:
"One of the major differences between the UK WAH-64 and US AH-64 variants is the folding blade mechanism to stow the helicopters in confined spaces; the rotor blades also have anti-ice protection to allow operations in arctic environments. Another is the use of the more powerful Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322 01/12 engines instead of the General Electric T700-GE-701Cs. The Rolls-Royce engine produces 1,565 kW (2,100 hp) vs 1,410 kW (1,890 hp) for the GE T700C engine. The Westland Apache can also carry and fire up to 76 CRV7 rockets."
It may be argued that we don't actually need such features but here isn't the place for an Apache debate. Back to the carrier theme, I wonder how useful COD aircraft would be for the Royal Navy? It seems they'll be a luxury we just can't afford.
mrgeorgeallison,
Entirely agree with you in regards to COD,I would be happy to see four or five Hawkeye in our inventory and that will take some fighting the treasury to get.
Lets get the actuall fighting capability sorted first.
jdam1,
Please don't destroy my optomism completely, one can live in hope.
With an even bigger bite of realism, lets get the carriers afloat first!!!
Nice photo today on the MOD site of Illustrious leaving Rosyth for trials, even better behind her is a excellent shot of Goliath.
