Lord - how would you like to be a rogue regime with these coming for you?

USS ALabama sir, impressive picture. speaking as ex army I have to say that pic shows what keeps the lid on international affairs! Can't wait until RN can support more fully with our own supercarriers.

    This bit interested me ...

A spokesperson for the MoD said: "We are currently finalising the 2012-13 budget and balancing the equipment plan. As part of this process, we are reviewing all programmes, including elements of the carrier strike programme, to validate costs and ensure risks are properly managed. The defence secretary expects to announce the outcome of this process to parliament before Easter

yes the cats n flaps was ammusing!

Reading the guardian for views on the carriers is like going to the BNP for views on minorities, we already know what they are going to say!

Comparing the F35C to the lovely old Tomcat-the F35c has more or less the same max takeoff weight (about 70,000lb), bigger wing area (668 sq ft against about 550 sq ft) but much less draggy airframe, similar dry thrust (about 28,000 lb) but a little less with full burner (43,000lb against 57,000lb). F14 went offthe deck at max weight at about 155kts, with good broad spread wings. With those extra wing square feet and a good lifting body shape, I'd guess f35c takeoff speed at max weight to be similar to the F14 (though cant find any figures on that, so happy to be shot down!).

So EMALS plus ship speed has to reach 155kts to throw a heavy F35 into action.

The info I've seen on EMALS says it can throw a 100,000lb aircraft to 130kts, so an extra 25kts of ship speed would be enough to reach that 155kts even for a plane 30,000lb heavier.

Considering how unlikely it is we'd ever load an F35 to the gills like that, I'd imagine an F35 would leap off the deck!

Im not a navy man, though gents, just interested in the subject. So others may be able to shoot holes in my argument. Don't kill me!

So we are talking of the vessel travelling at 25kts to give that wind over the deck, now given that on most days there is some form of wind at sea and that carriers turn into the wind for take off's we can safely say 'no problems'

Whilst I've nothing against Rafale or even Super Hornet, the overall F35 programme feels like it'll deliver a good next-gen plane. for 95% of our carrier uses F35 is probably overkill, but would be good to have that capability for the high-end 5%.

Japan is going for a fixed price guarantee on its F35s...might be the way to go for us too.

I thought the concerns re CVF max speed was related not to takeoff but landing - in that the stall speed of an incoming (part loaded) F-35 was such that it would have to jettison fuel/weapons before landing.
